“That’s correct. I was there with, ah, with Alec.”

“Did he leave with you?”

“No, but if you must know, he did come here last night, afterward, to make sure I was all right.”

“And your association with Mr. Alec Atwood?”

I grimace. “I will have no further association with him, either business related or personal. The two of us had a working relationship. He asked me out yesterday. We went out to dinner and then to his place, when the shooting occurred. I had not realized precisely who he was until that time. Had I known, I would not have even worked on his bike.”

“I see.” The cop has been writing notes this entire time, and once his pen stills, he looks up at me. “Is there anything else you can tell me that might help?”

“I don’t think so. May I ask you a question?”

“Go ahead.”

I hesitate. “Do you think I’m in any danger?”

“I would hope not, but I can see about having an officer assigned to you for your protection.”

“Thank you. That… That might be a good idea. Another question, if you don’t mind?”

He nods.

“Am… I…” I’m not even sure what to ask.

The police officer snaps his book shut. “I can tell you this much. We’ve been trying to watch these two… motorcycle clubs—”

“Gangs,” I say with a grimace.

“For some time now.”

“And?”

“And the one that is dangerous is more so the…”

“Armada?” I briefly shut my eyes.

“No. The…”

“The Rebel Brothers.”

The officer nods. “Yes. I am not at liberty to say more—”

“If you had a sister,” I say, since he appears to be around my age, “would you want her involved with either side?”

“No, but…” He shakes his head. “No.”

“Thank you,” I say quietly. “You ever make a snap decision and it completely turn your life upside down?”

“Not quite to this extent, but if you were only with Alec for this one time, perhaps the Rebel Brothers don’t even have you on their radar. We will do our best to make sure you are safe.”

I nod dully. “Thank you.”

“Here’s my card.” He hands it to me. “If you need anything, remember anything, call me.”

“Will do, but I already told you everything.”

“I would say that you don’t need to be worried, but…”
