“Oh, thank God. I’ve been… It’s been…”

“Are you okay?”

“I should be asking you!”

I hear a few beeps in the background.

“Are you in the hospital?” I ask, alarmed.

“Well, yes,” he admits. “They did some kind of gassing thing that made me pass out, and I am so sorry.”

“You’re sorry because they used biological warfare on you?”

“Yes, but you…”

“There’s no reason for you to be sorry,” I assure him. “I’m fine.”

“They told me you were kidnapped! I’ve been arguing with the doctor here to let me go, but they’re trying to figure out what gas they used on me. It’s not something they’ve ever seen before, so they’ve been running test after test on me, and they’re a little worried about what the long term side effects might be. It’s really the last thing I want in the world, but…I feel like I let you and everyone down.”

“You’re an amazing cop, and you put too much on your shoulders,” I scold. “You did nothing wrong, and I’m fine now.”

“How did you get out of there?”

“Alec,” I murmur.

“Alec saved you?”

I wince, not liking his surprise. “Yes.”

“You must’ve really made an impression on him.”

I rub my forehead. Josh overheard more than he should’ve about me and Alec and finishing our date.

I clear my throat. “I’m not… We went on one date, and that’s the last one.”

“He had to have risked his life to save you.”

I just shake my head. “Can you let me know when you’re out of there?”

“Of course.”

“Thanks. Feel better.”

“Yeah, yeah,” he mutters.

I hang up, shaking my head. He’s putting way too much on himself. He can’t take down Joelo and the Rebel Brothers himself.

Alec crosses over to me. “We’re going to be on here for another twenty or so. There’s a corner over there, and then we’ll jet it over to a pier. There are several over there, so hopefully there isn’t enough time for Joey to get eyes on all of them, and even if they do…”

“You plan on trying to outrun them again.

He nods.

I wave my hand. “Whatever.”

I start to walk away, but he places his hands on my shoulders.

“Hey, are you okay?”
