I shoved the thoughts away before I could flash on the hottest sex I’d ever had and get worked up all over again. Lorenzo got to me in ways other men didn’t, and it was disconcerting.
Pop’s Palace was pretty fucking amazing. It was a giant play area with jungle gyms, trampolines, tunnels and bridges, and ball pits the size of real swimming pools. It was every kid’s dream, I imagined.
“This place is incredible,” I said when we sat down in the parents’ area and studied a small menu.
“I don’t know what I would have done without this place,” Anna said, nodding. “When I get really stuck and we just don’t know what to do, I bring him here, and he spends hours in the ball pit or on the slides. I can work here, too.”
“You’re doing it all on your own?” I asked. “Isn’t his father in the picture at all?”
Anna shook her head. “No. Some men show their colors from day one. Others only show who they really are when push comes to shove and there’s a baby on the way.”
“I’m sorry,” I said.
“It’s fine, it’s my life, and I get to call the shots. Tell me what’s going on with you.”
I let out a breath that made my cheeks billow.
“Lorenzo came home with me last night,” I said.
Anna grinned. “Yeah, I noticed. You guys left without saying goodbye.”
“Sorry.”
“It’s fine. I’m glad you had a good time. You’re serious about him, aren’t you?”
I shook my head. “I’m not.”
Anna raised her eyebrows. “Does he know that?”
“Of course he knows that. We’ve come a long way.”
“Hmm,” Anna said, her eyes searching for Wesley. When she found him, she visibly relaxed.
“What?”
“What you say and what you do aren’t the same, you know?”
“Mixed signals?” I asked.
“Oh, no. Your signals are all pretty straight.” She giggled. “There’s no question that you and Lorenzo are drawn to each other and you have crazy chemistry and you don’t really try to hide it.”
I stifled a groan. “It’s not that simple.”
“Why not?”
I shrugged. “I just can’t be with someone like Lorenzo. He’s…” I tried to find the right words and finally sighed. “He’sperfect.”
Anna laughed. “You know that’s a good thing, right? It’s usually the reason peoplewantto be with someone and don’t run in the opposite direction.”
“That’s just the thing,” I said. “He’s perfect. He has a good bloodline, a lot of money, his family has a high standing in social circles, and as far as I understand, he’s set to inherit that stupid vineyard his family owns.”
Anna raised her eyebrows.
“It sounds pathetic of me to use all of those as a reason not to be with him, but my dad loves him, and if my dad loves him, he’ll approve of him being my husband.”
Anna shook her head. “I’m still trying to see how any of this is a bad thing.”
I snorted. “Giving my dad what he wantsisa bad thing.”
