“Well, then I’ll bring one.” I fold my arms, confident in my solution. “That way, you don’t have to worry about it.”

“You have them on DVD?”

“Even better… VHS.”

“Seriously!?”

Now it’s my turn to laugh. “No, not really. I wanted to see your reaction, that’s all. I’ll bring the movie and the drinks.”

“No, Maggie. You don’t have to–”

I put my hand up this time. “Nope. You’re hosting. And besides, I have a feeling you might need a few drinks to get through one of these movies.”

Blake takes his hands out of his pockets. “Alright, deal. Same time?”

“Perfect.”

“Goodnight, Maggie.”

“Goodnight.” As I open the door, I glance behind me to see Blake still on the bottom step, watching me walk inside. It isn’t until I shut the door and look out the peephole, I see him turn around.

Chapter thirteen

ThenextdayisSunday and I sleep in. Like, actually sleep in. When I finally roll over and look at the clock, it’s almost nine.

I can’t believe I slept this late!

Although, slept is a strong word. Even though I had a wonderful night with Blake, a nightmare still came in full force. I was up for a while afterward, but when thoughts of Blake entered my mind, his image coaxed me back to sleep.

Blake.I’m still reeling from our night. I mean, all we did was watch a movie, but I enjoyed being with him. Our walk home was nice, too. My skin still tingles in the places our arms touched.

I wonder what it would feel like if we touched other places?

As I clench my thighs together, my heart sinks when Blake’s voice echoes in my mind, neighbors becoming friends. That’s all he wants to be.

He didn’t make a move last night. If the movie thing was a date, why didn’t he kiss me goodnight? And even if the movie wasn’t a date, why didn’t he ask me on one? He had plenty of opportunities, and I’m fairly sure I made my interest clear.

Didn’t I?

I sigh, my body sagging into the mattress. Blake’s the nicest, most genuine man I’ve met in a long time. He also happens to be the handsomest, and I bet dating him would be amazing, but I have to face the fact thatIshut the door on us. Our movie night was nothing more than a way to blow off some steam. He helped me with a house issue, and we hung out afterward. Asfriends.

The buzzing of my phone on the side table interrupts my pity party.“Hello?”

“Hey, what are you doing?” Michelle asks.

“Laying in bed.”

“Are you sick or something? You’re always up before the crack of dawn.”

“No, not sick. Just tired and feeling lazy. No kids, remember?”

“Oh yeah. They’re at camp.” She sounds excited. “Well, how about we hang out then?”

“Yeah, but not today. I’ve got some things to do, and since I didn’t get up at the crack of da–”

“Before the crack.”“Right, before. I’ve got to get going.”

“Well, how about dinner tomorrow night? You’re off on Tuesday, right? We can go get Mexican and have margaritas. My treat.”
