“Good evening, sir,” I say.
“Brad is over at the bar. I need you to introduce him to the Sandersons,” he says, pointing Knox in the direction of one of his colleagues.
“Who’s Brad?” I ask, when we walk away from his dad.
“The new guy. The one I’m hoping takes my spot,” he says, lacing his fingers with mine.
“Bradley, I need to show you around to a couple of people. But first, I want you to meet my girlfriend, Sophia.” My body tingles at the word ‘girlfriend.’
I smile before glancing in front of me. My blood runs cold.
“Sophia. I’ve been trying to find you,” Bradley says, and his voice is like ice in my veins.
“You two know each other?” Knox asks, confused.
“Of course, we do. Sophia is my wife,” Bradley says, smirking.
Knox drops my hand, looking at me like he can’t believe what he’s hearing.
“I’m sorry. Your what?” He looks back and forth between the two of us.
“Sophia didn’t tell you she’s married?” he says.
He’s enjoying every bit of this. It feels like my heart might beat out of my chest.
“How did you find me?”
“I know a lot of people, baby. You didn’t think you could really hide from me, did you?” he asks, taking a drink.
“Sophia, is this true?” Knox says, and the hurt is evident in his face.
“It is, but let me explain,” I say.
“I don’t think there’s anything left to say,” he says, his cool and cold demeanor coming back.
He turns and walks away from me. I start to chase after him before a hand grips my arm.
“Where do you think you’re going?” Bradley asks, anger lacing his words.
“I’m going after the man I love. Get your hands off me,” I growl.
“You’re mine, Sophia. Or have you forgotten that?” he seethes.
“I’m not yours. I’ve never been yours. I thought I made that clear when I sent you the divorce papers.”
“Those papers meant nothing. I never signed them.”
“That doesn’t mean they don’t mean anything. You can’t just refuse a divorce.” I yank my arm away from him, my eyes searching the room for any sign of Knox.
“It would do you good to remember who you’re talking to,” he says––low enough for only me to hear.
“Fuck you, Bradley,” I say, running towards the doors.
I need to find Knox. I have so much to tell him. I should have told him everything from the beginning. I should have warned him there was a chance this could happen. I don’t know why I thought it was a good idea to keep all of this to myself.
I rush outside but don’t see him anywhere. The car has gone. I grab my phone from my purse and start dialing all the numbers I can before someone finally picks up.
“Sophia? Are you okay?” Kai asks.
