Two Hours Later

We’re in the car on the way to the house that Charlie’s at. I'm not going to lie, I’m worried that too much time has passed. I’m worried about what could have happened in the house since she sent me those first messages. I never messaged her back, because honestly, I was worried that he confiscated her phone when they got there. I hope she doesn’t think Iabandoned her.

“Are you okay?” Cameron asks from the passenger seat.

“Not really. I hope she doesn’t think I’ve just abandoned her,” I tell her, tapping my fingers on the steering wheel.

“Listen to me, if you two care about each other like you say that you do, she doesn’t think that. She’s a lot stronger than I ever gave her credit for. I think everything will be okay.”

I smile over at my sister. She doesn’t see it in herself, but she’s strong too.

I follow the GPS into an area I’ve never been before. This place is secluded and we’re lucky that she even has service right now. This whole thing could have ended differently if she wasn’t able to give me her location.

“This is kind of creepy,” Cam says, wrapping her arms around her body as we pull to the side of the road at the end of the driveway.

“I’m going to park here so he doesn’t know we’re coming,” I tell her.

We both get out of the car; I can feel the adrenaline in my body. I pat the back of my jeans to make sure the gun I brought is secure.

“Do you think you’ll have to use that?” Cam whispers, gesturing towards my back pocket.

“I will if I need to. I’ll do whatever I have to in order to protect her,” I tell her.

Cam grabs my arm, pulling me to a stop.

“You really do love her, don’t you?” she asks, tears filling her eyes.

“Yeah, I do.”

The rest of the walk up to the house is quiet. Both of us are lost in our thoughts and what might happen. I always expect the worst but hope for the best. I don’t want to use the gun, but I will if I need to.

“Whoa,” Cam says, looking at the giant house in front of us.

“Here’s the plan. You go knock on the door; I’ll stay off to the side. Pretend like your car broke down or something and try to get inside,” I tell her, and she nods in response.

I’ve got my back pressed against the side of the house with a clear view of the door when Cameron rings the doorbell.

“Do I know you?” Jasper asks.

I know it’s him. I’ve done enough digging on the guy. I pretty much know everything about him now.

“I’m so sorry to bother you. My car broke down at the end of your driveway. My phone battery is dead. Do you have a phone I could use to call a tow company?”

My sister really lays it on thick, batting her eyelashes, pulling down her shirt, giving him a view of her cleavage. This sleazeball has the nerve to check out my sister while the woman he’s supposed to be marrying is inside the house.

“Of course you can.” He smiles.

Once she’s inside, I walk around the house, peeking into the windows. Between the two of us, we’re trying to let it be known to Charlie that we’re here to help. Cameron’s phone is in her pocket and she’s going to send me a message when she thinks the time is right to knock on the door. The plan is for her to get close enough to Charlie to have her turn on the news. She has about five minutes to make it happen before the news breaks the story.

I look through all the windows, never getting a glimpse of anyone. This place is pretty secluded. Not only does he have it in the middle of nowhere, he also has black curtains, and every single one of them is pulled shut. He doesn't want prying eyes inside.

My phone pings from my pocket and I see a message from Cameron.

Cameron: GO.

I walk back to the front of the house, phone in hand, and ring the doorbell.

Here we fucking go.
