Marilyn didn’t mention that part when she asked if I wanted immortality.
“Oh, brother.” Pete scratched at the stubble on his chin and sighed. “You’re thinking. It’s always depressing to watch you think.” Said the one who worried the most when we escaped from our sire’s clutches.
Now look at him and Steve. They were so carefree and relaxed. Every second, day, month, and year that passed with no sign of Marilyn, they forgot and breathed a little easier.
Meanwhile, every second, day, month, and year that passed without finding a permanent way to kill our sire, I grew more restless. There was a reason for that. A scared, beautiful, brown-eyed reason.
“I’m so proud of you.” I smacked Pete’s cheek. The force snapped his head around. “Seeing you happy makes me all warm and shit.”
“You little liar you,” he deadpanned, rubbing his face.
I pulled my phone out and scrolled through the contacts.
“Could you be a little less obvious?” Steve stepped through the door. On his arm was a blonde with huge tits.
I ignored him, grabbing my nose ring out of habit and flicking it.
“Jayne still not answering?” asked Steve.
I gritted my teeth.
“She really doesn’t like us,” said Pete with a frown. “A shame. I really like her.”
“You can smell her fear and wariness a mile away when she’s around,” Steve added. “I’d love to take a bi—”
“Smell her fear?” The blonde interjected. I was glad she interrupted Steve. While I let them tease Jayne when she was around, it was something different when she wasn’t present. It implied that Steve literally wanted to sink his teeth in Jayne. And I couldn’t allow that.
“Yes, it’s like a perfume she carries.” He waved his hand around his nose and inhaled.
The blonde quirked a brow. “Um, okay? What do I smell like?”
“Like you want my cock,” said Steve. His obnoxiousness made Pete groan and cover his eyes.
The blonde gasped and dragged her hand over Steve’s crotch. “How did you know?”
“Because I can smell your arousal, and I’m hungry,” he said. She frowned as his eyes turned solid black and his fangs lengthened. “Relax.” He soothed her with compulsion. “I promise it feels good—the aphrodisiac from our saliva hitting your bloodstream is sometimes better than sex.”
It was why vampires were so irresistible to humans. And why Marilynhadhuman servants obsessed with a vampire’s bite. Hopefully, they were in better hands with her asleep.
“Yes,” the blonde agreed without protest.
He grabbed her by the head and tilted it. Exposing her neck, Steve sunk his teeth into her flesh. Blood ran down her neck, and my fangs came out. That happened whenever I was hungry or aroused—mine was from hunger. Famine was different for a vampire. It was like passion—a kind that, if not kept in check and learned, killed.
Pete walked over and joined Steve, grabbing her wrist. He punctured her skin, and it sounded more like a crunch to my sensitive hearing. The blonde writhed and moaned against Steve. The saliva didn’t take long to hit the bloodstream.
Steve pulled away from her neck and lifted her other wrist for me. “Come on and eat. We can go get the little lamb if we have to.” By little lamb, he meant Jayne.
“You didn’t see Jayne the night Amit took Ruth. She looked miserable and angry at the same time.” I stood and snatched the blonde’s wrist.
“I can imagine she’s quite lost without Ruth. Her boss was heronlyfriend.” Steve’s forehead furrowed. Knowing I wasn’t the only one genuinely worried about the cute brunette relaxed me. But that was all I wanted them to have for her.
Pete lifted his head and dropped her arm. “We’re worried about her, too. Despite her running from us, we’re all attached to her, too.”
Bringing the blonde’s wrists to my lips, I paused when Pete said, “I don’t get it. Jayne doesn’t remember, so why is she so wary of us?”
Closing my eyes, I drank from the blonde’s wrist.
It was Steve who answered, “She might not remember her encounter with us at the hospital three and a half years ago, but that doesn’t mean her body doesn’t remember. She had enough terror for twenty people.”
