“I’ll order room service, unless you’d rather eat in one of the restaurants?”

“Here is fine.” She inched her hand across the carpeted space between us and touched the tips of my fingers with hers. “I like the privacy.”

My abdomen clenched. The merest touch from this woman, and I turned to putty in her hands.Focus.Until I heard from the detective, I couldn’t allow myself to fall any harder.

“I’ll call down and order. Anything particular you want to eat?”

“Pancakes!” Chloe announced.

“He wasn’t asking you.” Ella flicked the end of her nose, making Chloe laugh.

“Bear wants pancakes.”

“Does he now?” I arched a brow. “Well then, that makes all the difference.”

I ruffled her hair and picked up the house phone, ordering a selection of breakfast items, then went to get a shower. As I soaped myself, an impossible dream nudged its way into my mind. That of Ella sliding open the shower door, climbing in behind me, soaping my body, my cock, maybe going to her knees and taking me into her mouth.

My hand found its way to my shaft, and I tugged hard. Once, twice, three times. I moved faster, locking in my mind the image of Ella at my feet. Her rosy lips closing around the head, her tongue playing with the slit at the top, her warm hands cupping my balls and squeezing just the right amount.

I bit my wrist as I came, jets of cum hitting the wall before the cascading water washed it away.

Please, fuck, please don’t let the detective find anything bad.

I dried off, ran a comb through my hair, leaving it damp, and dressed in my customary uniform of a turtleneck sweater and slacks. As I went back into the living area, a knock sounded at the door. I crossed the room and invited the room service attendant inside. He set breakfast up on the dining table, much to Chloe’s delight, who squealed at every item he unveiled. Her bubbling excitement must have woken Ginny, who padded out of her room, bleary eyed, and dressed in a set of Thor pajamas.

I only just managed to quash my laughter. Or so I thought.

“Listen, young man. I like Thor. What woman doesn’t want a man who can wield a big hammer?” She waggled her eyebrows.

Her double entendre hit me and Ella square in the chest. We both burst out laughing. The room service attendant blushed and backed out of the room. And as for Chloe, well, she was far more interested in the bear-shaped pancakes I’d asked the kitchen to make than why the adults in the room were laughing.

“Look, Mommy.” She picked up a pancake and brandished it in Ella’s face. “It’s Bear. It’s Bear, Mommy.”

Ella looked over at me and mouthed “Thank you.” I nodded, although I had done nothing other than ask. The chef had come up with the goods somehow.I must remember to tell Nolen.

“They are amazing.” She pulled out a chair and made Chloe sit down. “Not too much syrup, Chloe. And have some fruit.”

I poured a coffee, spooned some scrambled eggs onto a plate, and took the seat opposite, where I had a better vantage point from which to watch Ella mother her child. It was oddly addictive, the way she encouraged but didn’t instruct, coaxed rather than bossed, and managed to get the outcome she desired—namely, reducing the pancake intake in favor of fruit.

A master of manipulation.

I clenched my fists. Fuck. A horrible sense of foreboding crept across the back of my neck. I wasn’t letting her out of my sight today. Or tomorrow. Or any day until I heard back from the detective. Sadie had disappeared into the night, leaving me to pick up the pieces.

I would not allow Ella to do the same thing.

“Ginny, would you mind taking Chloe to the pool this morning? I need Ella’s help with something.”

Ella angled her head, one eyebrow raised. “What do you need help with?”

“Nolen.” I smiled a little, forcing myself to behave normally. “He needs some gentle persuasion in eating more fruit than pancakes.”

She caught on to my false reasoning without the need for further explanation. Throwing back her head, she laughed.

“I think your cousin might be a little trickier to coax.”

“True. But I think you’re up to the job.”

“In that case”—she tucked her chin into her chest and blinked up at me—“I’d love to help.”
