“No, that was my dad,” Tex groaned. “It happened way before I met Enzo.”

A little relief trickled down my spine. Tex hadn’t hurt him. Hadn’t gone after Benito. “Okay.”

“I’m guessing Benito didn’t give them to you. Those are the missing papers fromhisdiary.”

Who was he?Curiosity made it impossible to ignore it.

“Who?”

Tex blinked at me a few times. “Um...”

I needed to know. I didn’t understand why, but I knew if I wanted something more than a fake marriage with Benito, I needed to know to whom the diary notes belonged.

Tex looked at me and then at the pieces of paper in my hand. “Fuck it.” He turned around and caught one of the bartender’s attention. “I’m heading out early. Sorry.”

She waved him off, and he rounded the bar in seconds. “Enzo will kill me, but it’s us against the brothers, right? We have to stick together.”

I nodded. What else was I supposed to do? We were out of Blu and heading fuck knows where before I knew it. It was probably best; I wasn’t finding any answers at the bottom of a bottle. I groaned as I relaxed in the passenger seat of Tex’s car.

“You’re not going to puke or anything, right? I can take you to see Mel.”

I shook my head, but that was a mistake. The world was already spinning. “No, I’m fine. Are you going to tell me who the diary belonged to?”

“Yeah, just one second. We’re missing someone.”

Who?We pulled to a stop outside a townhouse. Ash stepped out with a bright smile. It was almost blinding to the point I had to look away.

“Why are we picking him up?” I asked.

“Because there is no way I’m being left alone with you. You’re too knife happy.”

I grunted. He wasn’t wrong. Ash hustled down the steps and hopped into the backseat.

“What are we doing?”

Tex laughed. “You sound excited.”

“I need some time out of the house. Giancarlo had that damn hammer in the bed last night. It got a whole pillow while I was forced to sleep on my side.”

“Silvy?” I asked.

Ash groaned. “She doesn’t get to be named out here.”

Tex laughed. “Man, still have no idea how you two work.” He pulled away from the curb and headed downtown.

I stared out the window and let my mind go blank as New York passed by. Their small talk was nothing more than white noise in the back of my mind as I tried to settle into the numbness from the alcohol.

“Hey, Harlow,” Ash called.

I blinked a few times. “Yeah?”

“Are you excited for your wedding? Giancarlo said I’d get to go. I can’t wait. This will be my first wedding." Ash sounded too enthusiastic about how I was feeling.

“It is what it is.”

“Man, ouch.” Tex whistled. He side-eyed me as he pulled into a parking lot. “We’re here.”

I slipped out of the car and stared up at some diner. “Why here?”
