“Duke,” she whispered. “I’m sleeping.”

“Bullshit,” I rumbled. “You want this just as much as me, baby. Don’t fight it.”

“Sleep,” she croaked as I tweaked her nipple, massaging her breast in my hand.

I rolled her over and sank between her thighs. My lips slid over her mouth, and this time she didn’t fight me. She wrapped her arms around my neck and her fingers threaded through my damp hair. I ground my erection against her core, but was interrupted by the doorbell.

I groaned, but kept kissing her. Nothing was interrupting me right now.

She pushed at my shoulders. “You should get that.”

The doorbell rang again, but I didn’t let up. I couldn’t get enough of her kisses. I was just about to sink inside her when it rang for a third time.

“Fuck, Bowie can get it,” I groaned, so close to feeling her heat around me.

“Bowie’s not here,” she gasped, spreading her legs wide.

My phone buzzed on the nightstand. That’s when I knew I couldn’t avoid whoever was at the door. I pulled away from her, checking the messages. It was Nick. Snatching my sweats off the floor, I pulled them on, but it did nothing to hide how painfully hard I was.

I looked longingly at Rae, who flipped the covers off and gave me a teasing smirk. Fuck, I was going to kill Nick. I leaned over and kissed her hard. “Stay,” I growled, planning to get rid of Nick and take my woman hard.

I stormed out of the room and marched over to the door. I flung it open and glared at the man. “What is it? You’re interrupting something.”

But he didn’t joke like I thought he would. “I just came from Jenna’s house.”

His lips were thin as they pressed together. Whatever this was, it wasn’t good news. I stepped aside and allowed him to enter.

“I’m sorry to come over at this hour, but it couldn’t wait.”

I ran a hand over my head and sighed. “Am I going to need coffee or something stronger?”

“Coffee. You’re going to need a clear head.”

That didn’t bode well for me at all. I got to work making the coffee. Meanwhile, Rae came out of the room, eyeing me warily. Thankfully, she was wearing my shirt, which helped to cover up her legs.

“What’s going on?”

“We’re about to find out,” I said, turning to Nick.

“There’s no good way to say this.”

“She’s dead,” I surmised.

He nodded.

“Wait, who’s dead?” Rae asked, walking closer.

“Carolyn. After you asked about her, I checked in on her. I couldn’t get a whole lot of information about her at first. The police did a house check and the boyfriend assured them she was fine and at work. Without any real cause for concern, they couldn’t take it much further.”

“Family hadn’t heard from her,” I argued. “How is that not a cause for concern?”

“There was no missing person’s report filed. Until there is, they can’t just storm in when he says she’s at work. But I kept digging. There’s no social media presence for her. I called her job, but they said she hadn’t been to work in over a month.”

My heart hammered in my chest while hearing this. None of this was good. “What else?”

“I drove down there with the permission of my captain. He happens to be friends with Jenna and considered it a personal favor.”

“What did you find out?” Rae asked, coming closer. I hadn’t filled her in on my request. At the time, I hadn’t even considered there would be any problems.
