Swallowing the embarrassment that was on the rise, I blew out a quiet breath. “Oh.”

Luis glanced between me and Damian with curiosity. I think I saw a little amusement flicker in his eyes too. I suspected Luis knew more about my relationship with his son than Damian thought he did.

As soon as my nervousness dissipated, I got caught up in an easy conversation with Luis. He was just as genial and welcoming as Damian said. The way he conversed showed that he was mostly serious, but now and then, he said something that had me in stitches and had Damian groaning his embarrassment.

“Tell me something, Cassandra. Are you and my son dating?”

My lip parted. “Uh… well…”

“Papa,” Damian warned. “We talked about you not embarrassing me.”

I smirked. “Did you?”

Luis laughed. “When he called this morning to tell me you were coming this evening, there was a brief conversation about me refraining from mentioning anything embarrassing. Mostly childhood stories…”

“I’m intrigued. Now I want to hear a few stories.”

Damian sighed, and I pursed my lips to hold back my giggle. Deciding to save him, I turned to Luis. “What makes you think we’re dating?”

“You’re the only one he’s ever introduced me to. I’ve met one of his girlfriends before but that was accidental.”

My curiosity was piqued. “Accidental how?”

“He was seventeen, and I caught him making out with a senior under the bleachers in the gymnasium. According to him, they were sort of dating.” Luis snorted. “I was confused. It’s either you're dating or you're not.”

The snicker I tried to hold back emerged.

Damian lowered his head and rubbed the bridge of his nose. “Needless to say, it wasn’t fun going to the same school my father worked at. He taught math.”

I laughed. “As a teenager, I couldn’t imagine the horror of seeing my mom at school.”

Luis grunted. “I stayed out of his way and tried not to embarrass him for the most part. Anyway, I never met another girl he was seeing or sort of seeing.” His grin was playful and resembled his son so much. “Well, until now…”

The heat of my blush was almost unbearable. I had no idea how to respond to Luis’s assumption that I was dating his son. “Well, Damian and I have…” An unconventional relationship?

Damian glanced at me with raised eyebrows and a little smile, then he jumped in to save me. “Papa, Cassandra and I are more than dating.”

Stunned, I looked at him. I caught on quickly that he wanted to break the news about the baby sooner rather than later.

I nodded my agreement.

“We’re having a baby,” he announced.

Luis’s eyes widened to saucers and he beamed. “A grandchild? That’s wonderful!”

I was happy the news brought Damian’s family so much joy.

Damian laced his fingers with mine. “We found out today it’s a boy.” The pride in his voice warmed me.

“How far along are you, Cassandra?” Luis asked, still smiling broadly.

“Four months.”

He laughed heartily. “I knew there was something more about the woman you only talked to at that wedding, son.”

I pursed my lips and embraced the heat scorching my face. Damian sighed and scrubbed his face before giving me an apologetic glance.

“Oh, don’t be so shy, you two!” Luis snickered. “It’s natural for you kids to move fast nowadays.”
