“So, you want to go back to the FBI, and work in the same division Ethan does?” he asked. “Is that what you’re saying? I’ve never been a Fed. I’ll have to hope I can get a job with the police.”
Oh, Jesus.
“Tommy, if I work for Elizabeth, I won’t be partnered up with Ethan. That’s HER personal profiler. Ethan works in the unit, but everyone calls him. He is with her all of the time. If anything, I’ll just see him when we’re in the office.”
Uh, no.
He thought back to the last week of phone calls and texting that was going on between them. Granted, he’d peeked in Gene’s phone, and there was nothing bad being texted behind his back, but it was too…
Friendly.
That was a gateway to infidelity.
He went there.
“Again, Gene, I’m not an ex-Fed,” he said. “I was a deputy, and I liked being a police captain, for as limited as that was. If we’re getting out, I need to lock down a job first.”
Gene didn’t understand what the issue was. If he worked, they’d be okay until Tommy found a job, or he could retire. He’d take care of him.
Someone was a damn good house husband.
“Maybe we go back to work here?”
What?
The?
Hell?
Was he out of his goddamn mind?
There was no way that Tommy had forgotten the man he’d had to kill because Gene was a target here. They’d put the dude in a box crusher and barely escaped.
They couldn’t go back to work here.
They got rid of most of the bad cops, but they weren’t positive they had them all. El Gato had poisoned the city and its police force.
That was a hard no.
“And dangerous,” Gene added. “This city is no place for someone who has been tagged as someone Hunter friendly. Besides, we don’t both have to work.”
Tommy stared at him.
“What does that mean?”
“We can go back, get married, start a life, and you can take your time and decide what you want to do. I’ll go back to the FBI, and support us. We’re not exactly struggling, Tommy. I have money from Preston and Purgatory.”
What?
A stay-at-home husband while his husband was at work with his sexy ex?
Was he nuts?
Tommy didn’t fall off the turnip truck yesterday. He saw the way Gene smiled and was a different person around Ethan Blackhawk.
Pass.
They’d had a talk, but still…
