“I’m glad you could join us. I wanted you to meet Scott before you heard something from one of my colleagues or one of our mutual friends.”

We had very few mutual friends. I suddenly found that knowledge very sad and telling. I just smiled and scooted my chair back. “I need to visit the ladies’ room before I leave.”

It didn’t take me long to take care of business, and by the time I returned to the table the bill had been paid and both men rose to their feet.

“Ready?”

“Yes.” I reached for my leftovers and turned toward the exit. David put his hand at the small of my back, whether out of habit or affection, I wasn’t sure. When we stepped outside, Scott rushed off to get their car, and I turned to David. “Why didn’t you tell me?” Knowing me like he did, I knew that he wouldn’t have to ask what I was referring to.

He sighed. “There wasn’t anything to tell, honey.” He reached up and tucked a strand of loose hair behind my ear. “I knew when I was younger that I was attracted to men, but not enough to keep me from falling in love with you and wanting to make a life with you. If anything, I was confused because I liked women too. Until six months ago, I hadn’t met anyone special enough that made me want to explore those feelings.” He laughed softly. “And you know me, I’m all about my work.”

I laughed with him. “That you are. At least you won’t have to worry about him wanting kids.” I knew my comment didn’t hold water. A lot of gay couples had children. I’d meant it as a joke, but David’s grimace revealed his regrets when it came to our relationship. “I’m sorry about that. You deserve children. That was selfish of me.”

I shook my head. “No, David. Don’t think like that. Under the circumstances it’s better that we didn’t have kids.” Now was the perfect time to tell him about Liam. “I’ve met someone, too.”

His brows shot up with surprise. “You have?” He grabbed me into his arms and gave me a big hug. “Oh, honey, I couldn’t be happier about that. Tell me all about him.”

It was then that Scott pulled up to the curb, and David and I pulled apart. “Some other time when we have more time,” I stated.

Scott rolled down the passenger side window and leaned over. He didn’t look the least bit concerned that he’d caught us in a hug. “Hop in and I’ll give you a lift to where you parked your car,” he smiled.

The sound of a motorcycle momentarily caught my attention, and I glanced across the street at the light. My mind instantly went to Liam, but when the rider sped past it wasn’t a Desert Rebels cut he was wearing but a Vegas Watchdog. I couldn’t tell who it was because he was wearing a full helmet with a black face shield, but his head turned my way as he passed, and I knew that he was looking directly at me.

Someone cleared their throat, and I returned my attention to David. He’d opened the door and was waiting for me to get into the back seat. “I valet parked,” I explained with a smile.

He shut the door and gave me another brief hug. “Talk to you soon, honey. I want to know all about your new man.”

Thinking about Liam always brought a smile to my face. It seemed that David and I had each finally met that special someone who made us happy, and I drove home with thoughts of my future with Liam on my mind.

Chapter 13

Demon brought the gavel down and directed his first words to me. “Until Cole’s a hundred percent, I need you to take over his responsibilities.”

I wasn’t totally surprised by his request. Our jobs in the club were closely linked, and we collaborated on a lot of shit. Cole was going to be laid up for at least a week or two, depending on his stubborn ass and Raven’s persuasion. For Demon to make that declaration now revealed that something was going down, and soon. I acknowledged him with a nod, but remained quiet.
