We chatted for a few more minutes until I arrived at my destination.

I sighed. “I’m at the grocery store. I’m gonna let you go.”

“Go get your man ice cream.”

“Clearly, I don’t have a man. Otherwise, I wouldn’t feel so damn frustrated right now.”

***

After I went to the store yesterday, I’d texted Mitch and agreed to the double date. We’d decided on tonight, and Josh was going to look after Scottie, although I’d yet to tell him exactlywhoI was going out with.

But when he asked me a direct question, I could no longer deny my plans.

Josh grabbed a seltzer from the fridge and cracked it open. “So, you’re meeting Lisa and her boyfriend?”

“Yeah.” I paused. “And one of his friends.”

Josh stopped mid-sip. “Oh...so, it’s a date.”

“Yeah. A casual one.”

He nodded and picked some lint off his shirt. “Well, that’s good.”

Things were quiet after that. Josh went to a corner of the living room, took his shirt off, and started working out—hard. As usual, I couldn’t help watching his glistening body in action. Although, never again would Istare.

The subject of my date tonight didn’t come up again until Josh and I were cleaning up after Scottie’s dinner.

“What do you know about this guy you’re meeting?” Josh asked as he wiped a dish.

“Just that he’s Rob’s friend, and he was really nice the last time I had dinner with them. He just happened to be there last time. He’s a biology teacher.”

“Oh, so you’ve met him before.”

“Yes.”

“What’s his name?”

“Mitch Ramos. Do you know him?”

Josh shook his head. “Name doesn’t sound familiar. Is he from here?”

“I’m actually not sure.”

“You don’t know where he’s from?”

“I guess I never asked him. Where he’s from doesn’t particularly matter to me, but I’ll ask him tonight. Anyway, I feel pretty safe, since I’ll be with Lisa and Rob.”

He grunted. “Hmm...”

I tilted my head. “Any more questions?”

“No.” His jaw tensed. “Guess not.”

He turned away and immersed himself in cleaning the kitchen.

“Are you okay?” I asked.

“Yeah.” He exhaled. “I’m good. Why do you ask?”
