Kenzie startled a little, “You want me to fix it? How?”
“Pull some water from the air and use it to re- hydrate the plant.” Raven explained.
Kenzie scrunched up her nose, trying to think. Raven liked to tell them what to do, without really telling them how to do it. Just make water from thin air, sure, why not.
She let out a deep breath as she tried to think of how she could do that, as the others waited quietly.
Then it struck her. The humidity in the air was like small water molecules. Kenzie closed her eyes so she could focus as she tried to pull the moisture from the air around her. It took a few minutes, but then she felt that gentle pulling feeling in her chest and knew she was doing it.
She opened her eyes to watch as the moisture gathered in the air over her palm. They were little droplets of water, floating, waiting for her command. She realized how much better and faster she was at using her element as she slowly drifted them across the room. It was a pretty sight as they got close to the window and the light from outside sparkled off the drops.
Then she waved her hand toward the potted plant and watched as the water droplets absorbed into the soil.
The plant didn’t instantly revive or suddenly turn green again as she’d expected, but she hoped it helped.
Raven nodded in approval, “Great job! Now it should be okay in a day or two. It’ll just need a little extra TLC, and it’ll be good as new.”
Marshall didn’t look convinced, “We’ll see. I think we are pretty much done here for now, so why don’t you guys head off for breakfast or whatever it is you do in the morning. I need to get some work done before I deal with the council. It’s only five am now, so there’s some time before you two meet up with Cassie.” He motioned to Sorcha and Kenzie, “So don’t stress over this now. We’ll meet up at Raven’s after dinner and get to work.”
It was still a little early for breakfast, so Kenzie figured she’d go spend a little time with Fiona and a good book. She hadn’t had much time to relax since she arrived here, and she kind of missed it.
Plus, books were like therapy, you could escape the real world for just a little while. With everything she had on her mind, an escape sounded perfect.
Kenzie and Sorcha were sitting in the middle of the training ring stretching. Practice with Cassie had been more intense than usual, and their muscles were feeling it. They had both been improving so much that Cassie had decided to make it harder by bringing in help.
Jordan had a blast fighting them, first in hand to hand then as wolves. Luckily, they had a great trainer and both women were able to hold their own against him. But then Cassie joined in, making it two against one.
Sorcha had a small claw mark in her side that was healing, and Kenzie had a bite on her left butt cheek that was throbbing as the wound slowly closed.
Jordan had laughed so hard after biting her, that she had been able to get the upper hand and take him down. Maybe it was a win because he was distracted, but she was still counting it.
Now her butt was aching, and even with the win, she hoped it would hurry up and heal. Of course, sitting on the wound probably wasn’t helping but she was just too tired to stand yet.
Cassie had already left to get ready for work and Jordan ran off to start his shift on patrol, so they had the ring to themselves.
She glanced around, watching the other training sessions going on around the yard. There were four training rings and other than theirs, they were all full of werewolves. One of the rings had kids and teenagers with a few adults keeping close watch as they worked through different maneuvers.
The first day they had trained, Kenzie asked Cassie about it, thinking they were incredibly young to be learning to fight. The youngest could not have been older than 9 or 10.
Cassie told her that every member of the pack started learning to fight at 8 years old. She said it was a class they took in school to make sure they at least knew the basics, and as they got older, the classes got more intense.
Apparently, Chris made it a mission to be sure every member of the pack could defend themselves after the attack.
A lot of people other than Rhiannon died that day, and if more people than just the guards had known how to fight, it may not have been so bad.
At first, she thought it was a bit extreme, but as she came to understand more about this world and the people in it, she thought it was a great idea. She had started to really care about the people here and was glad to know they could take care of themselves. She was determined to do her best to contribute as well.
Even though neither she nor Sorcha had come out of the fight unscathed, neither had their opponents. She figured they were doing pretty good if they could land blows on two of the pack’s best fighters.
As they finished their stretches, Marshall plopped down on the ground beside them, startling Sorcha. Kenzie noticed even though Sorcha flinched in surprise, she no longer pulled away from him. It was progress, and she hoped a small step toward healing.
Marshall laid down on his back to stare up into the bright sunny sky. It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in sight. It was the kind of day her mom would have loved.
Shaking off her moment of melancholy, she said to Marshall, “Did you get everything done this morning that you needed to do?”
“Yea I got the important things done. Aiden finished the plans for the bakery and approved them with Mrs. Jones, so I spoke with my foreman about starting the renovations this weekend. I also spoke with the council members and showed them the prophecy.”
“What did they think about it?” She was hoping it would be enough to make them leave.
