I pulled into the driveway and turned off the car, a huge smile stretching my face as I climbed out and took in the beautiful flowerbeds Darcy and I had made together. My girl had developed quite the green thumb and was really looking forward to showing her mom what she’d accomplished.
As I appreciated the beauty Darcy and I had made together, the front door opened and my man stepped out, a frown on his face and his arms crossed over his chest.
“You going to stand out here in the cold all day or get over here and give me a kiss?”
I laughed and shook my head and his grumpy tone. I secretly loved that he was still a bit surly. He wouldn’t be him if he wasn’t a pain in the ass every now and then.
I moved up the steps and stopped in front of him, tipping my head back so he could greet me with a slow, savoring kiss that never failed to curl my toes.
“Hey honey,” I breathed once we broke apart. “How was your day?”
His frown deepened as he pulled me into his arms, locking his fingers together at the small of my back. His grunt told me it hadn’t been great, and when Darcy came stomping down the stairs, I had a feeling I knew why.
“Sloane, will youpleasetell my dad he’s being ridiculous?” she shouted from inside.
I arched a brow at Silas and waited for him to explain. “It’s not ridiculous to tell you your shithead boyfriend can’t come over on Christmas. That’s a family holiday, and he’s not family!” Silas barked in return, and I immediately curled my lips between my teeth and bit down to keep from bursting into laughter.
Ever since Evan Reynolds and Darcy had started dating when she turned fifteen—the age he and Kim finally agreed on—the battle of wills between Silas and his daughter had doubled, leaving me to play mediator at least once a week.
Her dramatic cry carried through the house and out onto the front porch. “You’re ruining my life!” she declared, making Silas roll his eyes.
“Baby girl, if that’s all it takes to ruin your life, you’re in for a serious wakeup call once you become an adult.”
I muffled my giggle by shoving my face into Silas’s chest as Darcy continued to complain about how unfair life was.
“What about you?” Silas finally asked once the argument with his daughter was finished. “You have a good day?”
I smiled and gave my head a nod. “I really did. Then again, every day has been pretty great since this grumpy pain in the ass moved in next door to me.”
He lowered his head, brushing his lips against mine. “I heard about that guy. Word on the street is he’s devilishly handsome and has managed to ruin you for all other men.”
My head fell back on a deep belly laugh. When I righted my head and looked back at my man, he was staring down at me with so much love shining in his deep blue eyes, the sight of it took my breath away.
“You happy, baby?”
“Si, just when I think I can’t possibly get any happier, I go to sleep and wake up the next day to discover I was wrong.”
“That’s what I like to hear.”
With one last kiss, I took my grumpy boyfriend’s hand and let him lead me into our home, knowing that when I wake up tomorrow morning, I’ll be even happier.
The End.
