We both stare down at it sappily.
Then I say, “I can’t wait until we’re married. Who else in the world will be able to say that they fell in love with their husband for the first time twice?”

AUTHOR’S NOTE: The Worthings will be a series of books shaped by over-the-top tropes and premises like amnesia and shipwreck that I’ve always assumed are too bonkers to write in a plausible way. I’ve decided I don’t care if they’re plausible and will write them anyway! The next book in the series will be Replacement. It’s a twins-switch-places romance, and it will be coming out in early October. You can find an excerpt from it on the following pages. excerpt from Replacement
AHALF-HOUR AFTER Iturn off the lights, Amber’s phone rings.
I’ve almost dozed off, so the unexpected sound causes me to sit up straight in bed, my heart racing in anxiety.
I reach over to grab the phone and see William’s name and picture flashing on the screen. It’s a good photo, even though it’s clearly a snapshot. Amber must have surprised him as he was working at his desk because he’s got a wry, questioning look on his face. His hair is slightly rumpled, but he’s wearing a dark suit with a loosened tie. He’s got chocolate brown eyes that convey power and intelligence.
How the hell am I going to manage to fool him?
“Hi, William,” I say, keeping my voice level and casual despite the fact that the phone feels slippery in my sweaty palm.
“Did I wake you up?” he asks, sounding surprised.
“No. I was just taking it easy. How’s everything going?”
There’s a significant pause on the other end of the line. I gulp, afraid I’ve somehow already made a mistake.
But my question was completely innocuous. Surely William won’t read anything suspicious in it.
I let out my breath when he replies, “I’m fine. Is this a bad time? Am I interrupting something?”
“No, of course not. I’d actually just gotten in bed. Why would you be interrupting something?”
“No reason. You sound strange. Why did you ditch your driver this morning?”
