The girls went back to talking while I got to work putting my clothes away. In the closet across from my bed sat a dresser, so I put it to good use.

As I finished putting away all my clothes, I moved onto the second bag.

“What’s your name?” The red head called out, grabbing my attention.

“Aspen,” I answered dryly. I wasn’t sure how I felt about her yet, but she wasn’t off to the greatest first impression.

She pursed her lips thoughtfully, and I took that opportunity to go back to packing. If she expected me to ask what her name was then she was mistaken. I didn’t give a shit either way. Especially not when she made it abundantly clear that a roommate was the last thing she wanted.

“I’m Raven,” she continued. “And this is Gia.” She inclined her head toward the petite girl who just gave me a bored look.

I released a heavy sigh before straightening my posture. “We can skip the formalities. Small talk isn’t my strong suit.” To my surprise, Raven’s lips quirked into a smirk, and she didn’t look offended at all.

“Fine,” Gia said in a raspy voice. “What brings you here?”

I shrugged. “Fucked up too many times I guess.”

There was no sense in lying about it. I’m pretty sure that was everyone’s story here anyways.

My gaze snagged on a green and purple charm bracelet, causing my chest to tighten. I reached for it, taking it between my fingers.

Avery.

She managed to steal this for me years ago when we were at the orphanage together. She never told me where she got it, and it didn’t matter. This was the only thing I had left of her which was precisely why I didn’t wear it.

I carried the bracelet to my closet and placed it in my top drawer—away from prying eyes, and safe from the world.

“What classes do you have?” Raven pressed once I returned to my bed.

A frown tugged at my mouth. “I’m not sure.” I started scavenging through one of my bags until I located my schedule. Dropping my eyes to the sheet of paper, I started to read it off.

“First period with Mr. Monroe, History—”

“Seriously?” Gia cut in, scrambling off the bed and moving to join me on my side of the room. She snatched the schedule from my hands and started reading off the classes herself.

I arched an eyebrow as I watched her. Did people here think they were entitled to other people’s belongings or something? Raven just smirked from the edge of her bed as if reading my thoughts.

“We have first period together,” she informed me. “And you have third period with Raven.”

“You had to take my schedule from me to figure that out?” I questioned bitterly. She snorted at my tone and handed it back, amusement swirling within her brown orbs.

“I think I like her,” she chirped, spinning on her heels, and moving back toward Raven’s bed before sitting on the edge.

My forehead creased in confusion. Most people weren’t a fan of my…extreme personality. The word bitch was one that I was well acquainted with. These two girls didn’t seem phased in the slightest by anything I’d said. Maybe I got lucky in the roommate department after all.

The girls let me finish unpacking in silence which I was thankful for. By the time I was finished, Gia had already left to go back to her room.

Despite sleeping on the way here, I was exhausted and more than ready to hop under my blankets and fall asleep.

A yawn crawled its way up my throat as I sleepily changed into a pair of loose pajama pants and a black T-shirt. As quickly as I could, I made up my bed and then burrowed beneath it, resting my head against the soft pillow.

“I’ll get the light,” Raven offered as she stood.

I barely acknowledged her as my muscles relaxed and my breathing grew even. I wasn’t sure what awaited me tomorrow, but for the first time in a long time, I felt content.
