I look away and grab my bouquet of lilies off the counter. “You don’t know me anymore, Tex. You don’t get to pretend like you do.”

He laughs. “I know you’ve been looking at that paper by the window. That’s some incriminating shit.”

My gaze widens and my heart thumps hard against my ribcage. He read the note. How long was he in the room before I noticed? “Get out! Get out now!” I’m shouting the words loudly enough that I hope someone in the hall can hear, but no one comes.

He shakes his head and closes the door, a grin on his face as he moves. Oh, God. He’s insane. Maybehesent the note.

“What are you doing, Tex? Anyone could come up here any second.” I glance down at my phone. “I’m thirty minutes late for my wedding.”

“Let them. I’m not hiding anything. I’m trying to help you avoid ruining your life.”

I laugh and cock my head to the side. “Is that right? And how are you going to do that? Are you here to profess your undying love for me?”

He narrows his thick brows and looks away. “Don’t flatter yourself, mama. I’ve long since moved on.”

Considering it’s my wedding day, I should be glad he moved on, but there’s a little twinge of disappointment in how easy it was for him to say it.

“That’s great!” My response is way too enthusiastic. “You’ll be happy to let me leave this room then.”

He drags his hand over his beard and his dark eyes meet mine again. “Not until I find out who this note is from.”

My lungs empty without permission. “Johnathan is always in danger. As his wife, I’ll be in danger too. It’s not a thing that should worry you. And now, I should get downstairs.” Even I don’t believe my plea.

A mocking snicker leaves his throat. “It also says he’s cheating on you, and that the woman is pregnant. There’s an ultrasound attached. She wants money, or she’s threatening to hurt you. That’s more than danger.”

I bite the inside of my cheek and shrug. “It’s not true. He wouldn’t do that to me.”

“Right.” His tone is condescending. “That’s why you’re still up in this room with me, instead of skipping down the aisle toward the man of your dreams.” His gaze glowers. “Which, if we’re being honest, is a serious downgrade after me.”

“Of course you’d think that.” I cross my arms in a huff and step toward the door, but Tex lands his heavy hands on my shoulders and stares down at me with that intensity he’s famous for.

“Tell me you trust him, and I’ll leave.” His voice somehow gets deeper as he says, “I’ll leave, and you can go on with whatever you’re trying to prove here.”

I draw in a deep breath and consider his question carefully.

Do I trust Johnathan?

Before my brain has an answer, my throat squeaks.

Tex stares down at me. “What does that mean?”

I shrug and shake my head as tears roll down my cheek. “I don’t know.”

Within seconds, I’m lifted onto his shoulder like a sack of potatoes or a bag of grain.

“What are you doing?” I holler, punching his back.

“You said no. You don’t trust him, so I’m taking you away… to think.”

“I said I don’t know!”

He laughs deep in his throat. “All I heard was no.”

Chapter Two

Tex

Sierra is exactly like I remember her. Thick, gorgeous, and annoying as hell. No, annoying might not be the right word, but the context is close enough that I’m sticking by my declaration. It’s nothing I haven’t said to her a dozen times over. Plus, the woman wouldn’t know what was good for her if it were slapping her in the face. Or in this case, if it were tossing her onto a motorcycle in a wedding gown.
