CHAPTER30
KILLIAN
My grandfather appears thoughtful as we sit facing one another in his den, the sun streaming through the window, unlike the previous time we were here.
I have done everything he asked of me and as he makes certain everything is to his liking, he pours me a glass of whiskey and, handing it to me, says in his deep voice. “To your marriage. May it bring you everything you want.”
“To my marriage.” I raise my glass and savor the bite of the amber liquid as it slides home.
He sets his glass down and says thoughtfully, “Can you trust the girl?”
“Of course.”
“I have investigated her family. That’s a strange town she comes from.”
He appears thoughtful and I must agree with him.
“Heaven is an anomaly in our great country. However, it’s precisely that which makes it of interest to our organization.”
He nods, staring at me through sharp, deadly eyes.
“Her father, Elijah Sanders.”
“What of him?”
I am interested to see what my grandfather’s point is.
“We have heard of him. He runs an opium operation.”
“That was checked out and found to be wrong for our organization. We used it in the past but reports weren’t good so I sent someone to investigate.”
“Who did you send?” He is alert and is obviously hiding something from me and my thoughts turn to Gabriella and the mysterious man in the white suit.
A shiver passes down my spine as I sense he is about to remind me why we leave nothing to chance, and I realize I made a terrible mistake in trusting that woman.
“Gabriella.”
A flash of irritation passes across his face and my heart sinks, knowing I fucked up.
“What did she tell you?”
“That the opium wasn’t up to standard and wouldn’t pass the most basic test if we tried to sell it on.”
Before he can speak, I say with a growl, “I have information that I need checked out.”
“I’m listening.” He raises the glass to his lips, and I lean forward, staring at him with a dark frown.
“Purity remembered meeting Gabriella that day. She was on her way home from school and saw Gabriella leaning against a white car.”
He says nothing and merely swirls the liquid around his glass as I continue.
“She handed Purity her business card and told her if she ever needed a job to come and find her. She did.”
He nods. “Not unexpected. Gabriella never passed an opportunity by to make money.”
“That isn’t what’s bothering me.”
His eyes gleam as I speak. “She wasn’t alone. Purity told me a man in a white suit came out from the house and ordered her to leave. He appeared angry and as they drove off, Purity entered the house and heard her father on the phone. He was angry and said he wouldn’t do business with the monkey. They needed to send the organ grinder. Then her mom appeared, and she heard no more.”
