"Right." He took my bag and motioned with his head to precede him. I had a feeling he was hiding something. Was it that he was keeping me in the dark about the case or that this was likely our last moment together? I’d have thought he’d tell me our one-and-done had finally come to an end. He’d burned out his interest in me. Or maybe he figured I should just know that and wasn’t going to bother to tell me. He could be an insensitive oaf.

I suppose this would be better than an awkward goodbye.

I didn’t like uncertainty, so I decided to confront him. "This is goodbye, isn't it? Even if my dad remains in danger, I’ll have a different bodyguard from now on, right?”

His brow furrowed. "Why would you think that?”

"Am I wrong?"

He looked down at the hands clasped in his lap. "No."

I didn't say anything as I waited for him to elaborate. He didn't. I guess that was that.

"I need to stop at a convenience or drug store."

For a moment he looked confused. Had he expected me to beg for more time? Or did he need a minute to catch up to the new topic?

"No."

“Yes. I need things that I don't want others to get for me. They’re personal.”

"No."

"Yes. Should I ask Ian to take me instead?" It was petty, but I was desperate.

The comment had the desired reaction. Alex's eyes narrowed and his jaw tightened. "Fine, but I go in with you and you do what I say.”

Hmm, that wouldn't work. I needed to think of a plan where he wouldn’t be looking over my shoulder as I grabbed a pregnancy test. A test I didn’t need, except to reassure myself that I wasn’t pregnant.

"Pull up to the next drugstore,” Alex told our driver.

Crap, what was I going to do now?

When the car pulled to the curb, Alex told me, "Wait here for a moment. " He stepped out and appeared to scan the area. "Alright, come on."

I scooted out of the car and entered the store wondering what the heck I was going to do. I headed down the feminine hygiene aisle. Panicking, I grabbed tampons and pads. I mean, that’s what I was going to need when my period finally came.

Alex’s cheeks turned red as he saw what I was buying. And with that, an idea formed.

“Here." I shoved them at Alex.

"What?" His hands wrapped around the items, his expression horrified.

"I need you to hold those while I look for vaginal cream.”

Alex’s eyes darted around the room, probably not looking for Pitney’s men but instead making sure no one could see this manly man holding tampons and pads.

I grabbed a douche and yeast infection cream and handed them to Alex too. “I need these after all that sex.”

“Good Christ.”

“Oh, I need to check for nipple cream. You’ve sucked mine raw.” I didn't know if such a cream existed, but I felt sure he didn’t either.

"Jesus fuck, Victoria.”

"Oh, look, UTI relief.” I grabbed a box. “I should get some. So much sex can lead to a urinary tract infection.”

“God damn.”
