He recoils as if I've slapped him, his hand dropping from my neck as he steps back from me. He stares at me, the seconds passing slowly, feeling like a small eternity as my heart thumps loudly inside my chest.
Admittedly, a part of me, a very small part, almost regrets what I just said to him, seeing the undeniable look of pain written on his face.
“Fine,” he finally says, his voice quiet as a whisper.
He flicks the switch on the wall, immediately returning the glass to its clarity before turning and walking back to his desk.
“Then we have work to do today, I need the financial reports from accounting, as well as all my meetings for tomorrow canceled. Oh, and email Cal to make a few phone calls and find me a contact for the people handling the Walston Street deal. Rumor has it their current contracted buyers aren’t going to have the funding to solidify the deal, and I want them to know we are interested.”
Is that it? Did I just…win?
“Yes, Sir,” I say with emphasis, grinning as his eyes dart to mine.
He shakes his head before snatching his fancy letter opener off his desk and stabbing it into the wood.
“Go get some work done, Abigail.”

Suddenly, an unfamiliar noise chimes, indicating a notification has come in.
My brows furrow as I hunt for the culprit, only to discover that it’s an email notification.
FROM: [email protected]
SUBJECT: You’re welcome.
Glad to see you’re acquainting yourself with your new phone. Heard you broke yours last night.
Figured it was about time that you had a company one. Your emails, calendar and contacts have been synced for you.
For your convenience.
Roman Antonov.
CEO of Nikotech Investments.
No. Fucking. Way.
I stare at the phone, disgust flooding my veins as anger swells inside me. Hitting “reply” my nails audibly tap against the glass, my fingers flying over the screen as I type furiously.
FROM: [email protected]
SUBJECT: No.
Are you kidding me? A company phone? So now when I go home I can’t escape this building? Absolutely fucking not.
You can take this phone back.
Abigail Wayne,
Executive Assistant to Roman Antonov, CEO of Nikotech Investments.
I resist the urge to throw this very expensive phone at the nearest wall as I see that it automatically signs the email off with a digital signature.
