“Walter, Mike, I’m glad you’re both here. I need,” My phone buzzed, and I stopped speaking. Hurriedly, I picked it up to read what Brian wrote.

Bunny: Yes, I’m off tonight and the next two days, but I have to go to my parents for the obligatory Sunday dinner. But other than that, I’m free.

Me: Terrific! Are you up for a surprise celebratory getaway?

Bunny: To where?

Me: That’s part of the surprise

Bunny: Okay. I’m down for a surprise ??

Me: Wonderful! Pack warm :)

Bunny: Ah, a clue. Do I get anything if I figure it out? ??

My mind immediately went to the gutter. Over this time, we’ve gotten more and more intimate. I wanted to share my whole self, and I felt it was getting to that point, but I was still nervous. Even though I’ve been attracted to a man, I’ve never had sex with one.

A chuckle pulled me from my thoughts, and I jerked my head up. Walter, Katie, and Mike all had broad smiles on their faces. I raised my finger. “One moment.” I turned back to my phone.

Me: If you figure it out, you’ll get two surprises.

Bunny: LOL When are you coming?

Me: I’m wrapping some things up. I’ll be there in an hour.

Bunny: See you then ??

I grinned at the kissing emoji on the screen before I lifted my head and focused back on the trio. I first turned toward Katie. “Katie, I need you to clear my calendar for the next three days. I also need you to call Aden and Jasper. Tell them I need the helicopter to pick me up at Hayden’s Building in an hour and a half to take us to the airport. I’ll also need the jet ready to fly out immediately, with a flight plan for New York. And please have a bag packed for me with essentials for a few days."

Katie had taken her pad out and wrote furiously. “Do you need accommodations and transportation in New York? Is there a meeting?”

“No meeting. It’s personal, but book the presidential suite at the Four Seasons and a driver,” I replied.

I looked at Walter, who appeared ready to explode. “I know, I know, security. We’ll hash that out in a minute.” I focused back on Katie. “Did you need anything from me?”

She shook her head. “No, I’ll get this taken care of.”

“Thanks, Katie,” I said as she exited the office. “Let’s talk security. I’m thinking—”

“Sire, before we go into security, there’s something you should know.”

I stilled at the seriousness of Walter’s voice. “What happened?”

Walter let loose a deep breath. “There are major rumblings within the pride. News of you cavorting with a man has spread like wildfire. There are many uncomfortable with their king being with a man.”

“Who? If they have a problem or think I’m less than them, my door is right there.” I pointed to my office door. “They can challenge me any time I like.”

My lion roared within me. He was furious. How dare anyone challenge our authority? Our mate was the most important thing in the world, and we’d never give him up.

“I understand,” Walter said gently. “But maybe now isn’t the time to go—”

“My trip to New York is happening. I’m spending time with my mate. I’m hoping soon to announce to the entire pride who Brian is and who he is to me. I won’t stop wooing, cavorting, as they put it, with my mate.”

Walter bowed his head in acceptance. “Very well. I still think this issue needs to be addressed as well.”

I nodded. “I agree. That’s why you’re going to stay here and find out who exactly is stirring up the hornet’s nest.”

“What about your security?”
