“Tell us what’s going on.”

“First, I need to hear this hair story,” Callie said.

“I wanted to go blond, okay?” Ursula sniped. “I just need another wish spell.”

“My wish hasn’t even come true yet,” Sirena said sharply.

“Maybe you didn’t do it right. That sounds like a you problem.”

“At least I’m not wishing again,” Sirena pointed out.

Lucy held up a hand. “Everyone, pump your brakes. Let’s chill out, drink some tea, and talk about our next steps.”

“There’s no need to talk. I don’t want tea,” Ursula said. “Let’s get the book and make this wish happen correctly this time.”

“A second wish couldn’t hurt,” Callie said, biting her lip in thought.

The burning in Lucy’s ears intensified. This wasn’t the right step. She’d finished reading the Wishcraft Made Simple book recently. She had to have faith and trust the process. The wish was going to work out. “You can’t call it off,” Lucy warned. “It’ll be worse if we stop cold turkey. The second spell could backfire and make everything worse.”

“I don’t like the sound of that,” Sirena said. “Let’s just let it ride.”

Ursula closed her eyes, took in a deep breath, then snapped them open. There was a dangerous determination in her eyes that made Lucy lean back against the table.

“I’m going to do this with or without your help. You can either help me or get out of my way.”

“Lucy might be right.” Callie walked out of the room, shaking her head. “I’ll be right back.”

“We’re not making another wish,” Lucy said. “Just let it play out.”

“Let it play out.” Ursula bit off each word. She practically shrieked. Sirena glared. Lucy stood still. “My future is on the line, but you’re too busy trying to get with Alex.”

“How is that relevant?” Lucy demanded.

“The only way you could ever get Alex is because of the spell.” Ursula crossed her arms over her chest, rolling her tongue in her mouth. “Tell me that isn’t true.”

Sirena cut Ursula a sharp look. Lucy clicked her back teeth to keep from snapping at her.

Lucy faced her cousin head-on. “You don’t throw bad magic after good.”

Callie returned, cradling the family spell book. “I found something. Nana left a note.”

“I—I didn’t see a note. Did you see it?” Lucy stood next to Callie. Ursula joined them and looked over her shoulder to read the note.

Callie read it out loud. “‘Remember, once the wish is made, it can’t be taken back until it is done. It might take days; it might take years. Wish well and with a wise heart, my darlings. Love, Nana.’”

“This isn’t happening,” Ursula huffed. She rushed out of the kitchen. Neither Callie nor Sirena moved. Lucy rushed after her. It was too easy to get a spell from a neighbor or a friend. Someone had to keep Ursula from burning the Grove down with chaotic magic.

“Hold on. Wait,” Lucy called. Ursula kept going. She reached for the door handle and yanked the door open. Lucy shoved her hand against the door and shut it.

“Don’t try to stop me,” Ursula said.

“He wasn’t my wish,” Lucy snapped. “I didn’t wish for Alex.”

Ursula studied Lucy with a skeptical glare. “But I saw you. You wrote—”

“I told you not to look. I asked for excitement in my life,” Lucy said.

“What happens when the spell ends? This whole thing isn’t you,” Ursula said, waving her hand dismissively. “Making cream-puff towers, singing karaoke, and designing houses. It’s all been the wish. You think he likes you? He likes what the spell makes you do!”
