He wove his fingers through hers. Home. This was home. They fit together like the last two pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. It had taken them years to get to this point, but everything clicked together. They clicked. Her soul rejoiced. He wrapped her in his arms, then pulled back; love shone in his eyes deeper than any part of the ocean.

“Do you know what happened to the merman who fell in love with a witch?” Alex asked.

“I have no clue, but I can’t wait to find out,” Lucy said, bringing him back into her arms.

He spoke against her forehead. “I’ve heard that if you catch a merman, you get a wish.”

“No need. I have it all.”

Epilogue

The Following May

Make a wish.” Lucy placed the funnel cake with a single candle in front of Alex. He peered down at the cake with a raised brow. They sat at the picnic tables adjacent to the Madame Zora booth, beneath the Ferris wheel lights.

“I thought you were baking me a cake,” Alex said with a grin.

“I figured your sweet tooth wouldn’t mind something different,” Lucy said.

“I still want your sweet cream.” The underlying silkiness in his voice captivated her.

“Well, I do take special requests.” Lucy winked, waggling her brows at him. Alex gave her a long, lustful look, then blew out his candle. Lucy clapped. Alex tore the funnel cake into large chunks and handed her a piece. They ate, talking about which rides they wanted to go on and which games they wanted to play. She licked the sugar from her fingers while he watched her with a secretive smile.

“What did you wish for?” she asked.

His eyes sparkled under the festival lights. “I can’t tell you or it won’t come true.”

Clever merman. His birthday gift arrived yesterday, but she hadn’t had time to wrap it. She’d been too busy unwrapping him in their bedroom. Everything squealed at that thought. They had a home together. Lucy studied him; her chest burst at the sight of Alex. Her heart lifted. Everything was in its right place.

“If you keep staring at me like that, I might think you love me,” Alex teased.

“I do. I absolutely do.” She meant every word.

“Did you get Quentin’s email?” Alex asked, cleaning the sugar from his hands with a napkin.

“I did. I’m skipping the class notes this year.” Lucy ate another piece of funnel cake. If people wanted to know what was new with her, they could check in on her with a text. Otherwise, she didn’t need to update people about her life. Her life was golden.

“Too bad. I’m submitting my note this time around,” Alex said.

“Oh?” Lucy asked. She couldn’t keep the surprise from her voice.

“Something tells me I’m going to have good news to share with the Grove.” Alex tilted his head to the side. “Can I get your opinion on it? I’ll give you a private reading.”
