The only other thing in the room is a bright spotlight that is shining straight down on him as if he’s a one-man show on stage.

“Seems like you’ve made an enemy of the wrong man,” I mutter, pacing back and forth in front of his unconscious body.

I’ve stayed well out of the deal Kane made with Victor to get out of this life. I think all of us who knew anything about it believed that Kane was playing with fire.

You don’t just leave the Hawks and turn your back on Victor. That isn’t how this fucked-up life works.

I can only assume that Kane has something up his sleeve to make it happen.

Honestly, I really fucking hope he does. It’ll be nice to see that there is a life outside of all this. It’ll help to restore my faith that there is more for me and Alana. More than suffering the horrors of her past and holding back on what I want.

A man can dream, right?

Kane groans, but he doesn’t come to. Whatever they’ve given him, it was clearly a decent dose because he’s not a small guy. He’s a wide receiver for the Maddison Kings Panthers for fuck’s sake. Something else that a normal Hawk doesn’t get to achieve.

“What is it about you, huh? Why are you defying all the odds?”

The door behind me opens before the deep rumbling voices of my father and Victor make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

I’ve never hated anyone like I hate them, and I really hope that after I’ve put them both in the ground, I never have to feel it for anyone again.

They come to stand in front of me just as Kane stirs again. And only a few seconds later, he opens his eyes. Confusion floods them as he tries to figure out where the hell he is.

"Ah, you’re finally going to join us," Victor taunts.

"What have you given me, you asshole?" Kane slurs, proving that I was right about the dose they administered.

"Just a little something to help make you a little more… agreeable."

"It's going to take more than what you've given me to make that happen," he snaps back, refusing to back down even in his position.

"Oh, I don't know," Victor says, stepping forward into Kane's space, “I seemed to get you here fairly easily.”

“What do you want?” Kane spits.

Victor chuckles, but it quickly becomes clear that no man in this cell is scared of him.

“What do I want? You really are fucking stupider than you look, boy.”

“We’re done, Victor. I told you, take away everything. I want nothing more to do with you or this bullshit life. I am done.”

My eyes widen at his words.

He’s been given the promise of the most incredible future, and yet he’s throwing it all away for love.

It’s the first time I’ve really considered that we might have something in common because I’d do exactly the same for Alana.

“You’re a fucking idiot. You don’t get to give this up because of a girl. A fucking Hunter girl at that. Have those girls got diamond-encrusted cunts or something?”

“The only cunt around here is you, Victor. Let me go and I’ll walk away and never look back.”

“It’s almost sweet that you think I’ll allow that to happen,” Victor mocks, smoothing down his obnoxious tie and turning to look at Dad and then me, expecting us to back him.

I do because I have to. But honestly, I’m with Kane here.

"I think you'll do exactly that, Victor,” Kane states confidently.

"Oh yeah, and why is that? Why would I let someone who knows so much about me and my business just walk away scot-free?"
