Whoops, he might have spoiled the reveal.
“Oh, er, sorry?”
Juliette shook her head, looking back at Jonah. “Give me the names of the men she was having an affair with.”
“No. Leave my wife’s memory in peace.”
“Given that her murder is unsolved, and that the man who killed her—her own husband—not only got away with it, but has used her death to further his Bible-thumping empire, I’m guessing she’s not at peace.”
“I won’t tell you anything.”
Juliette looked at Devon, who had a cell phone to his ear. “See if you can figure out who she was sleeping with.”
“Because you think that maybe one of the men she was sleeping with was a member and told her,” Brennon said.
Juliette shot him another exasperated look.
“Sorry! I just… It doesn’t make sense.”
Now Juliette looked at him with interest. “What do you mean?”
“Let’s say you’re married to that.” He pointed at Jonah.
“The horror, the horror,” Izabel murmured.
Brennon grinned at her but kept going. “You’re married to that, have a kid, living that preacher’s wife lifestyle. But you’re miserable.”
“That tracks,” Izabel said.
Rowan snorted in laughter.
“So you have an affair. Better than that, you have a menage affair.” Brennon thought it through, his mind quickly considering and then discarding plotlines. “You meet your lovers at a hotel. You get close. Close enough that one, maybe both of them tells you a secret. Why do they tell you?”
Brennon doesn’t wait for anyone to answer. It wasn’t a question. It was a dramatic device.
“They tell you because they’re reassuring you that they can get you out. They can help you grab your kid and escape your marriage. They have the resources and money, and most importantly, powerful friends.”
“My mother would never—”
“Shut up,” Izabel snapped at TiffaniGrace.
“That’s what I’m assuming,” Juliette said.
“Okay…then why would you tell your husband? Why tell him about the secret society one of your lovers is a part of? The secret society that might be your ticket out of there.”
“Maybe she was a spy,” Rowan said. “Maybe he sent her in to seduce information out of someone.”
“I considered that, but then why kill her?”
“I didn’t kill my wife,” Jonah’s voice boomed, and it was filled with such conviction that it was easy to see how he got his followers to believe his bullshit.
“Yes,” Brennon said dismissively. “You did. And once the case is reopened, it’s going to take ten, maybe fifteen minutes before you’re arrested. Let’s just treat that like a foregone conclusion. It’s plausible that your wife knew about the Trinity Masters because of her lovers, but I can’t figure out why she’d tell you.”
Brennon looked at TiffaniGrace. “I can easily imagine how you got her to tell you. All you’d have to do is threaten her child. And given that minutes ago, you didn’t seem to care that we were going to torture your daughter, I’m guessing you would have had no problem threatening to hurt TiffaniGrace as a way to control your wife. But here’s the problem…how would you know to even ask about the Trinity Masters?”
Brennon looked around, wondering if someone else had figured out something he hadn’t.
Juliette motioned for him to go on with a wave of her hand.
