Devon shook his head once. “No, I’m not.” He met Brennon’s gaze. “But she’s here.”

She. He was right. The Grand Master was a woman.

And the Grand Master had been kidnapped. This was…bad.

“The two of you were kidnapped together,” Rowan breathed.

Devon nodded.

“Are you one of the councilors?” Brennon barely whispered the words. “I heard the Grand Master has councilors.” That would explain how Devon knew who they were. It would make sense the councilors would know the members by name if not by sight.

“I am.” Devon’s gaze dropped to his hands, which had curled into fists on his lap. “I’m also her husband.”

Devon was married to the Grand Master. Wow.

“They think I’m the Grand Master. They asked me questions.”

There was something in his voice that made Brennon’s body tense with dread.

“They tortured her,” Devon said. “To get me to talk.”

Brennon’s stomach dropped, and he knew exactly how Devon felt.

“They tortured our fiancée too,” Brennon said. “We had to watch.”

“I’m sorry,” Devon said.

Brennon nodded. “But they wanted her to talk. They weren’t hurting her to make one of us answer questions. I wish they’d hurt me instead.”

“You look like you’ve been through it.” Devon motioned to his face.

“What happened to me is nothing compared to what they did to Izabel,” Brennon said. “And they beat Rowan.”

Devon looked at Rowan, examining him with a critical eye. “Ribs?”

Rowan nodded. “Most likely bruised. Don’t think they’re broken.”

“And Iza…Izabel…they…” Brennon couldn’t get the rest of the words out.

“Controlled drowning,” Rowan said.

Devon cursed.

“And when they took her to the bathroom, they…touched her,” Brennon whispered. “And now she’s all alone and they might be…”

Rowan made a noise low in his throat, a sound of pain and rage.

“I’m sorry for what your fiancée is going through. The good news is, if they want information from her, they probably won’t kill her.”

“She gave them information. About members,” Rowan said.

Devon winced, then leaned his head back. “They might be planning to take others now that they have positive IDs.”

“She only named people powerful enough they’d be hard to take.”

“We should have been hard to take,” Devon countered.

Rowan’s jaw muscle flexed.
