“I don’t think they’re home either."
“God,” she groaned.
The haste and panic were nightmarish. We crashed and stumbled into each other. Eventually though, we made our way to a side street and eventually we burst out onto the main road along with many others.
Anna was amused as we watched people fall all over each other, both drunk and amused and all I could do was shake my head at how lacking in dignity it all was.
“All for some fake martini’s,” I said with a sigh, and she laughed even harder.
“It was worth it.”
“Well, it won’t be, Anna, if we don’t find our way back to your house in the next thirty minutes.”
“What about Brett?” Anna asked. “Maybe he could help us out.”
“Does he have a car?”
“I don’t even know if he drives but I’ll call him.
“You have his number?”
“Of course, I do. He’s in our grade, you know.”
“You know I don’t talk to anyone.”
“Exactly," she muttered as she tried to find his number. “And how’s that working out for you now?”
We walked along the beautiful houses of the affluent neighborhood. I waited for the call to connect and listened as Anna spoke to him. She sounded excited and so when the call finally ended, I was hopeful for good news.
“He doesn’t have a car,” she said, and my spirits instantly deflated.
“But that Lucas guy does. They said they’re going to turn back and watch for us, so be on the lookout.”
I turned, my pulse immediately quickening.
“They’re coming back?” I asked almost to myself, but Anna noticed and responded.
“That’s what I just said… oh there they are!”
“Brett!” she called out and we watched as an old Camry pulled up to the sidewalk.
Brett leaned out of the passenger window and waved at us.
“Miscreant mobile,” he said. “Let’s go! Hurry up.”
Anna laughed as she hurried over, but I refused to run faster than was needed.
Soon we got into the back and a spicy scent hit my nostrils.
My gaze instantly went to the rearview mirror, but all I could see was the side of his face as he pulled back onto the road and began to drive cautiously away.
“I’m starving,” Brett said. “What do you guys say we stop by for some McDonald’s? Lucas?” He didn't respond but Anna did.
“I’d love that.”
I jabbed her with widened eyes.
“We need to get home.”
