Page 62 of Until He Confesses
I was shocked to hear this and even more confused because there was no way this could have been possible back then.
“What kind of evidence?” I asked as she set her glass down.
“A video,” she replied, and I couldn’t believe what she was saying.
“Was this before I met you?”
"Of course not. It was after we had started dating."
I gave this deep thought, but she was already gathering her phone and the blanket she had brought along with her.
"Then why can't I remember it?"
She didn't respond, so I rose to my feet as well and caught her arm.
"Let me go," she said, but I refused. "Lucas?"
I caught and turned her until she was staring into my eyes.
And then I asked, "How could you have seen something that I never did? Was it recorded? If it was, then why didn't you show it to me? Were there pictures?"
She was darkly amused.
"What? You want to tell me now that they were all fabricated?"
"Is that a possibility?"
"Ten years ago? And why would anyone want to fucking fabricate a video against you?"
She looked at me, and then realization seemed to strike her.
"Oh," she said, and I wondered what new insight she was coming to.
"You're asking now because you're scared that I'm going to use it against you in some way?"
I frowned, truly shocked at where she had gotten such an assumption.
"Well, don't worry about that," she said. "I'll never humiliate you for free."
"So, you do still have whatever evidence it is?"
"Of course not. Why would I hold on to that? I threw it away and moved on."
I watched her.
"Relieved?" she asked, and then she forced herself to wrench her hand free.
"Let me go," she said again, and I had no choice but to do just that.
I watched her, but just before she left, I said one last thing to her.
"If someone told me you cheated on me back then, I wouldn't believe it. I would come straight to you with whatever evidence they had put forward and ask you about it. Before I made any conclusions. Before I broke your heart. This is why I'll always remain mad at you because you never gave me the benefit of the doubt."
She stopped once again, but she didn't respond. Instead, she continued on her way and made her way off the boat.
