My heart skipped a little bit at just how close to the truth this was, but I didn't deny it, not so fast. Because the last thing I wanted to do was alert her. She knew me too well.
I took my time and continued calmly drying my hair. I did give her a look through the mirror before I turned my dryer back on, and her eyes widened.
"Oh," she said. "You are… is that why you were mad at me and Anna?"
Her words were a bit surprising to me, but as I processed it in my head, I realized that it made a lot of sense, and it was currently the best way for me to get both women off my ass. And I nodded.
"Yeah," I replied.
"Yes, to what?" she asked, and I sighed.
"I'm dating someone."
"Ooh," she said and hurried in to stand by my side. I was ready to throw her out, but when I saw the excitement on her face and recalled why she was here with me, I didn't.
"Tell me about him," she said, and I truly wondered about what to say or if I should continue with this facade at all. It didn't make any sense, but then, in order for me to live out this time with Lucas as peacefully as possible, I figured that it would be the best course of action.
"Did you know Callie was dating someone?" I suddenly heard her ask as I brushed my hair and turned just in time to see my now-dressed roommate. She gave me a look as she came in, attaching her studs to her ears.
"You are?" she asked, and I nodded.
"Yes, I am."
She narrowed her gaze at me, and my mother caught it.
"You didn't know?" she asked. My gaze met Anna's through the glass, and although it was brief, and I didn't particularly intend to convey anything, I was appreciative when she took the initiative and agreed.
"I didn't know things had progressed that far between you two," she said and leaned against the door. She folded her arms across her chest, and I rolled my eyes.
"I really hope you don't get fired for minding my business for me and not showing up for work on time.”
"I won't," she said pointedly, and my mom looked between the both of us.
"Okay, there's something going on here," my mom said.
"Anna, is she lying?" my mom asked. It took a little while, but eventually, Anna turned to her with a smile and shook her head.
"No," she said. "I just didn't know things had escalated so quickly from the last time she told me about him."
“Told you she didn't know everything," I said, and my mom shook her head at both of us.
"I'm hearing two different stories," she said. "So, when either of you are ready to tell the truth, let me know.”
With that, she turned and left the room, leaving my nosy roommate and me alone. I glared at her, but all she did was smile knowingly.
"New relationship?" she asked, but I ignored her.
I really didn't intend to say anything else, but when she kept staring at me, I couldn't help but snap at her.
"Aren't you going to work?" I complained, and she gave me a dry look.
"You're really not going to explain?" she asked. "I just lied to your mom."
I was tired of them hounding me, but then I also knew that this was the norm between us due to just how familiar we were with each other. I wouldn't have it any other way. We were more like sisters than friends, especially since we had known each other for so long, and in all that time, no topic had ever been off-limits to us, except my breakup with Lucas at the time.
This time around, however, I still didn't know whether to share my current arrangement with him. It wasn't something that I wasn’t proud of or wanted known, so I ultimately decided to keep it to myself. She soon realized it and got angry, and then she sighed, checked her watch, and shook her head.
"Since you're not involving me now, don't come to me when there are issues," she said, and I was left alone. It was my hope that there would not be any issues, at least none that would be detrimental to my health enough to seek her help or assistance.
