"It's just the flu."
"You used protection?" she asked, and I went silent.
She turned to me then, her eyes wide open.
"You didn't?"
"I'm on birth control."
"And you were consistent?"
"Of course I am," I said, but I didn't actually believe myself one bit.
"We weren't... it wasn't a regular thing between us. We would do it when we couldn't hold back, and then we'd stay away from each other for a while.”
.
"So, you weren't consistent with the pills?"
"I was, but you know, sometimes you're in a rush and you forget."
She started to scold me again but then stopped and sighed.
"Maybe this is not a bad thing."
"We don't know anything yet," I said, and she gave me a look.
"I'll go buy a test."
"No," I told her. "I just want to rest today. It might be absolutely nothing at all. I've been eating out recently, so food poisoning's on the list."
"Well, it better be," she said. "Especially after all the alcohol you drank this evening."
"Jeesh, you sure know how to rub salt into someone's wounds," I said, and she laughed.
"You're not wounded. You just might be pregnant with your boss's baby."
I let out an aggravated groan at her words, but despite her complaint, I was glad she was here. Otherwise, having to deal with this alone... the suspicion and fear... alone. It would have been a hundred times more difficult. She got up a few minutes later to retrieve our sweet cinnamon tea, and it was just what I needed.
A few sips later, I was completely refreshed, while she was scrolling through the channels on TV. And then she sighed quietly.
"What will happen if our suspicion turns out to be true?"
"I have no clue," I replied reluctantly. "But it won't be. I'm fine. It's not that."
She turned to look at me.
"And if it is? Is he absolutely horrible?"
I thought of the man in question and how our relationship had changed over the time I'd been here.
"He's not the same, Diana," I said, and she turned to me.
"In what way?"
"Back then, he was cocky... confrontational... I hated his guts. But now..."
"You have feelings for him?" she asked, and I nodded.
