Page 88 of Trust Me

I gasp at the sight of Kyle seated at the end of my sofa, glaring at me. His eyes spit fire in my direction. My entire body stiffens, and I can’t bring myself to take another step.

He knows.

It takes a moment, but that’s the one coherent thought my mind can process. The coldness in his demeanor, and the rage in his eyes, all point to the fact that he’s somehow found out the truth. Before I could tell him.

“Didn’t I tell you not to cross me, Riley?”

His voice is low, deep, and dangerous.

“How did you get into my home?”

He slowly blinks as he looks me up and down. Kyle doesn’t answer my question as he rises to his full six-foot-three height. While it’s not the first time I’ve noticed how tall and large Kyle is, this is one of the first times I’ve truly taken in how imposing he can be.

He slowly strides in my direction. I step back until the back of my heel hits the front door.

“Are you certain that’s the question you want to ask me right now?”

I swallow. Probably not, but too many questions are racing through my mind to find the right one to ask now.

“Kyle, I—”

“You what?” he asks through gritted teeth. “You’re going to tell me you aren’t a conniving fucking liar?”

His words almost bowl me over. I avert my gaze because looking at him with that venom in his eyes is too hard, not after seeing him when he looks at me with such tenderness and care.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper.

A laugh breaks free from his lips, but there’s nothing humorous or lighthearted about it.

“Not yet, but you will be,” he promises.

“A-Are you going to call the police?”

His lips tighten as he folds his arms. “Why, Riley? Why would I call the police? I want to hear you say it out loud.”

I fist the strap of my handbag and turn my head away from him. “I lied to you.”

“A lie is telling someone you’re six-foot when you’re five ten. What you did was more than a fucking lie!” His voice raises this time.

“I’m sorry,” I repeat because I’m at a loss for words.

“Stop saying that. We both know you don’t mean it.”

“I do,” I protest because I hate the look in his eyes. “I never wanted any of this. I had no intention of deceiving you or anyone at Townsend Industries.”

He snorts. “Right. You just intended to fuck me so you and my former best friend could sneak your way into my family’s company to get what you wanted.”

“What?”

“Don’t fucking play dumb, Riley. You know damn well what Dean and his family tried to do to me.”

I shake my head adamantly. “I don’t know. I mean, I do know his father went to jail for corporate espionage, but that’s all.”

Kyle’s frown deepens. “Bullshit. Don’t act like Dean and you didn’t have a laugh over him sending you in to do the same shit he did to me. He used our friendship to try to get files from my father’s office. Isn’t that what he sent you to do this time? Except, he told you to fuck me to do it, right?”

“No.” I shake my head adamantly. “That’s not what any of this was about. That wasn’t whatwewere about.”

“There is no we!”
