“Eliza will be fine?” Ruben asks. “She’ll be able to carry my children?” He snakes his hand around my waist and draws me in toward his warm, hard body.
Josiah looks at me, then to Ruben. “I don’t see any problems with that. You’ve stopped bleeding, which is a good sign, as is the fact you’re healthy with no other symptoms to say it wasn’t terminated thoroughly. I would advise you not to try to get actively pregnant for another month, just to give your body time to heal, but to answer your question, Ruben, yes.”
“What about protection?” I ask.
“If pregnancy is something you want, then I suggest using condoms during the four- to six-weeks she still needs to heal completely. After that, knock yourselves out.” Ruben tightens his grip on my hip and smirks confidently.
“So sex is fine?” He’s such a boy.
“Yes, Ruben,” Josiah says as he stares at him. I feel my cheeks turn pink as I close my eyes and try to disappear. “Eliza, if you need anything, just call me. If you start feeling any fevers, or body aches, or anything else, call me right away. However, the chance of anything happening at this stage is slim to none.”
“Should she be on bed rest?” I look to Ruben with wide eyes and shake my head.
“No, she’s fine to go about her business.” I get the feeling Josiah is amused by Ruben’s overprotective ways.
“I’ll have the nurse increase her visits.”
“She already comes to the house in the morning and evening, Ruben. And, Maria’s here all the time, and Josiah said I can call him,” I try to reason.
Ruben scrubs his hand across the stubble on his chin. “You’re right.” Thank God. “I’ll have the nurse move in.” Seriously?
Josiah chuckles and I roll my eyes. “Thank you, Josiah,” I say hoping to get him out of the house so Ruben and I can have a conversation about the nurse.
“Have a good day,” Josiah says before leaving the bedroom.
I turn to Ruben and place my hand on my hip. “I don’t need the nurse any more, Ruben. Pay her for the rest of the month, but let her know I’m fine.”
“I’ll do no such thing.” His brows draw in together. “Did you not hear Josiah? Anything can happen.”
“It’s been three weeks and nothing has occurred. So, please, let the nurse go.”
“The nurse can sleep in your old room.” He starts toward the door completely disregarding my wishes.
“You’re exactly like the guys I read about.” Ruben stops and turns to face me. “See.” I point toward him. “The guys I read about do what they think is the safest thing for their women. That’s you.” I make a circular movement with my hand around his body. Ruben stares at me with his hard eyes and rigid posture. “Can you please yield on this? I know my body, and Josiah said if I feel anything to call him. I promise that I’ll let you know right away if anything changes.” I cross my heart for added effect. “Please?”
Ruben pinches the bridge of his nose and releases a heavy sigh. “If there’s even a slight feeling that something is off, then the nurse will move in and you’ll be on bed rest.”
Although his request is ridiculous, at least he’s relinquishing the reins enough not to smother me. “Deal,” I say.
He steps closer and presses a kiss to my temple. “I have work to do.” Ruben is an enigma when it comes to emotions. His love language is protection. “Before I forget, that package has arrived. It’s in my office.”
“Oh, what is it?” I ask as I follow and catch up to him.
Ruben links our fingers together as we head down the stairs and toward his office. “You’ll see.”
On his desk sits an ordinary package. “Can I open it?” I ask as I stand in front of the box and eagerly look between it and Ruben.
He pulls his chair back and sits in it. “Sure.” Ruben leans back and watches me as I tear at the box. Inside, there are individual gifts all wrapped in the same red paper. But each gift is numbered.
I unpack and line them up on the desk. “I don’t understand.” Ruben’s amused as he lifts his shoulders. “Should I start unwrapping?”
“Do what you like?”
So much excitement is cascading through me, but I’m not sure what to do. “I need some guidance, Ruben. What do you want me to do?” I look at the six numbered packages with eagerness. “Should I just rip them all open? Or open them in order?”
“Unwrap the first one, Amorina.”
My veins buzz with enthusiasm as I bounce on the balls of my feet. “Okay. Ready?” Ruben chuckles causing me to pull my hand back and look at him. “What?”
