“Will you stay with Ruben?”
I look to Storm and push my fingers through his fur. “Yeah, I will.” It’s not fair for them to have to stay home because I’m a nervous wreck and can’t go anywhere. I need to do this for my sister, considering everything she’s done for me.
“Yay!” Rose claps her hands together, then throws her arms around me and squeezes with all her might. “Thank you. And if you need anything, call me and I’ll make sure we return straight home.”
There’s no way in hell I’m going to bring her back from her honeymoon. “So, you never told me, where are you going?” She lifts her shoulders. “Or don’t you know?”
“Nope. All I know is we’re taking Dominic’s private jet.”
“He has a private jet?”
“I only found out about that two days ago.”
“Huh,” I groan. “I wonder if that’s normal in this lifestyle?”
“He didn’t have one?” We both hate him so much that even saying his name makes us gag.
I shake my head. “Not to my knowledge, but then again, I was kept in the dark about everything.” I was literally in the dark. Now, I have to have a night-light on in order to be able to sleep.
“May I have this dance?” Ruben’s gravelly voice startles me. I turn to see him standing beside Storm. “Amorina?”
“Me?” I place my hand to my chest. “You mean Rose, right?”
“No, I’d like to have this dance with you.” He stretches out his hand for me to take. Storm stands and wags his tail.
“Um.” I glance at Rose, not really sure what to do. Rose gently nods and smiles at me. “Of course,” I say in a small voice and place my hand in Ruben’s.
Ruben looks down to Storm and commands, “Rimanere.” Storm sits and watches as Ruben and I move to the dance floor. “Storm is looking after you.” Ruben places his hand to my lower back and guides me close to his body.
“He’s a good dog.”
“Do you feel comfortable with him?”
“More than with people.” Ruben’s dark eyes are locked on mine, forcing me to lower my chin to escape his intense gaze.
“Dominic and Rose will be going on their honeymoon straight from here,” Ruben begins as he leads me around the dance floor.
I know where this is heading, and I look over to Storm, who’s watching us. “I know you’ve offered to have me in your home while they’re away,” I say.
“I did.”
I purse my lips together and lower my chin. “May I please ask if it’s okay that Storm stays with me?”
“Will Storm bring you comfort?”
“Yes, sir.” His hand tightens around mine. “If it’s okay?” I lift my head to look into his dark eyes. His jaw is tense and hard.
“Ruben,” he corrects.
Ashamed, I let my head drop. “I’m sorry,” my voice quivers with fear. Is he going to hit me? I brace myself, waiting for the strike of his hand.
“Amorina, Storm is yours.”
I intake a sharp breath and look up at him. “Mine?”
“He’s yours.”
My feet stop moving as I stare at Ruben. “Mine?” I repeat as I take my hand off his shoulder and place it to my chest. “Storm is too important to give to someone like me.”
