“Yes,” he says, though he’s shaking his head.
“Then why are you shaking your head?”
Ruben intakes a sharp breath as he keeps his dark eyes locked on mine. “The truth is, Amorina, I have plenty, and I want you to have plenty too. I have no interest in taking anything of yours, including any money you earn. That’ll be yours to do with whatever you want. And this.” He snatches the card out of my hand and tosses it away like it’s trash. “Means nothing to me. The only thing I want is for you to be happy. And if that means you’re unhappy with the sheets on the bed, buy new sheets. That’s what that credit card is for. If you want new boots because they’ll make you happy, then buy the damned boots. If you see a painting you love, buy the fucking thing.”
I look over at the credit card lying by the door, walk over, and pick it up. “Thank you,” I say as I hold the card in my hands. “You constantly surprise me, Ruben.”
“Because I want to give you the world?”
“Because you want to give me the world with no strings attached. My programming is struggling with your kindness.”
He holds up a finger and points toward me. “We’ll keep that part between us.” His damned wink makes my knees wobble. Ruben stands and closes the distance. He sifts his fingers through my hair and kisses me with passion. “How’s your ass today?” He snakes his other hand down and grips my butt.
“Deliciously sore.” I smile against his lips at the memory of what he did to me last night when he returned. He was in a great mood, and I reaped all the benefits. Three times.
His grip tightens as our kiss intensifies. “Good.”
Someone clears their throat from behind, and I pull away and duck my head, embarrassed to be caught. “Uncle,” Dominic says, smiling.
“Dominic.” Ruben lifts my head and gently places a kiss to my lips. “Enjoy your time with your sister.”
“I will,” I reply as a massive smile breaks out on my face. He tenderly strokes my cheek before looking over my shoulder and pulling back. I turn to find Dominic with his hands in his pockets, his head tilted to the side, and a small smile on his lips. “Is my sister here?”
“She had to duck into the bathroom.”
“Thank you,” I say to Ruben as I leave the office. I head toward the foyer to find Rose approaching. “Rose, I’m so happy to see you.” I can’t help but throw my arms around her and squeeze with so much love.
“Whoa,” Rose grunts as I propel her backward. We stand embraced for what feels like forever, and when she finally pulls back, she has the biggest smile gracing her beautiful face. “What’s all this about?”
“I can’t tell you how happy I am to see you.”
“Mrs. Sacco,” someone says from behind me.
“Yes,” both Rose and I answer in unison.
Christian looks between us and straightens. “The cars are ready, ma’am.”
“Thank you, Christian.”
“Oh, where are you going?” Rose asks.
“Dominic obviously didn’t tell you.”
“Tell me what?”
“Ruben’s arranged a spa visit for us, then we’ll go out for lunch.”
“Oh.” Rose’s eyes widen. “Has he now?” She shakes her head. “My husband didn’t tell me.” She drapes her arm over my shoulder. “Are you ready?”
I look down at my clothes, then hers. “Should we change? We’re both wearing tights and oversized sweaters. Should we wear something more...you know...appropriate?”
“We could go out in potato sacks, no one is going to say anything about it. And you know why?”
“Why?” I ask as we slowly make our way toward the front door.
“Because you’re with the Don, and I’m married to the underboss. Not one single person is going to bat an eyelid at what we’re wearing.” I crinkle my brows as we leave the house and enter the car. This is really the first time I’ve considered the enormity of the positions Ruben and Dominic hold. “What is it?” Rose asks once our car starts down the driveway.
“I never really thought about it like that.”
