Eva's brows wrinkled as she frowned deeply and stared at me intently. “If it didn’t affect you so much, why did you almost lose your baby?”
I drummed my fingers on the table and raised my shoulders. “It had an effectwhenshe spewed her nonsense, but now…”
“You are defending him.”
My fingers paused in midair as I met Eva's twinkling eyes and mischievous grin. “W-what? I am only saying I found out that she was only trying to scare me. That’s all. I am not defending Sergey.”
“Oh, yes, you are, Lilianna. You like him, don’t you? You fucking like Sergey.”
“N-No. No, I don’t like him.”
“Of course you do, Lily. Now that I think about it… I’m not sure why, but you look good. Too good for someone that was kidnapped.Toogood for someone that should be going through hell.”
“Eva,” I waved a hand to stop her from rambling, but she ignored me and swatted my hand away.
Her lips parted as she snapped her fingers. “Oh my God! You two…”
My breaths came out short and raspy as my heart pounded harshly against the walls of my chest. “Will you stop already? My goodness. I say one thing, and you find a way to start connecting dots.”
She scoffed. “Relevant dots,” she said, and I tucked my hair behind my ears and swiped my tongue over my lip.
“Look, I don’t have feelings for him, okay? I mean, fine. Let’s face it: Sergey is an attractive man. He is…”
“Hot? Sexy? Makes you want to drop your pants—which you did?”
I suppressed a grin and leaned forward to smack her arm lightly. “All I am saying is… the plan to leave is still on.”
All humor flew out the window.
Deep down, despite craving my freedom and motivating myself to pull through with the plan to run away from Sergey's castle, I felt guilt gnaw at my nerves at the thought of leaving him.
The smile on Eva's face dropped, and she scooted closer to the table with a serious expression.
“Lilianna, you have to be careful. That man is dangerous. I won’t forgive myself if anything happens to you. Won’t you reconsider? Maybe we can think of another…”
“No,” I shook my head. “We won’t. I have made up my mind, Eva. Don’t worry. I will be just fine, okay?”
A beeping sound distracted us, and Eva glanced at the watch on her wrist.
“Shit!” She cursed and shot up from her chair. I followed suit, and immediately Finley was on his feet as well.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, but she grabbed my hand and quickly led me out of the café. “Hey! We haven’t even ordered yet.”
“Forget that, Lily,” she murmured. “We are late for your appointment.”
“Oh, shit.”
“Come on,” Eva's footsteps pounded against the concrete sidewalk as we marched on, with Finley following closely behind. “It’s just right down the corner.”
After a long and tiresome walk to the clinicjust right down the corner, which turned out to be more thanjust a few blocks away, we finally arrived at the front desk, panting and gripping the desk to steady ourselves.
I frowned at Eva. “We could have taken the car.”
“Exercise is good for pregnant ladies like yourself, Lily. You don’t always need a car. Walking is good too,” she said off-handedly and went on to talk to a nurse about our appointment, which had been scheduled for fifteen minutes earlier.
“Dying is not,” I coughed. “I am out of breath.”
The nurse handed us a bunch of forms to fill out, and Eva chuckled as she led me away from the desk and towards the waiting area.
