"Are you the police?" she asked.

"No, lass, we're not."

"Sokolov was the one who did this to me."

"Aye, we know. Sinclair knew the danger you were in just by being in the bar the other night. That's why he took you," he said, putting his phone away.

"He gave me a message for you." She thought of Imogen. She must be so scared.

"Aye. It's what he carved on your stomach. The crest." He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his thighs.

"No, there's more. He has Imogen. They're going to kill her," she said.

"Imogen?" Gabriel questioned.

"She's the girl I was renting a room from. My friend. He told me Sinclair is to meet him in five days and he wants the painting. He said I need to be the one to bring it."

"Jesus Christ," he said, crossing himself. "We didn't know about your friend. I'll need to tell Alex."

"Where am I?" she asked again. "I mean, on a map."

"We're outside of Aberdeen, in the countryside."

The power began to flicker and then went off entirely. Alarms sounded on the various machines.

"What's happening?" she asked.

"I'm not sure," Gabriel said, standing up.

Dr. Forbes came rushing in. "Someone's cut the power."

"How do you know?"

"We have backup generators in case of outages or foul weather. This is a total system failure."

Sinclair charged in. "We need to move her to the bunker. Someone's on the property."

"I don't like the idea," Forbes said. "We'll barricade in here."

"No, Sin's right. Get her out of here." Gabriel rummaged through a cabinet, coming out with a hospital gown as Forbes unhooked the IV from the bag and tubing. "Help me sit her up," Gabriel said to Sinclair.

They each took her by a shoulder. She winced as the pain in her stomach radiated throughout her entire body. Gabriel held the gown up and she slipped her arms into it while Sin tied it at the back. A loud crash could be heard outside along with people running.

Sinclair picked her up. "I can walk," she protested, struggling in his arms, but the pain overwhelmed her, and she started to feel faint.

"Wheest," he hushed her. "We'll move faster this way."

He pulled a gun from the holster strapped around his chest and handed it to Gabriel.

Gabriel nodded. "Follow me."

He led them out of the infirmary and down a hall. It was pitch black and the men seemed to be maneuvering their way around by instinct. They went through a set of heavy double doors that led outside. The moon lit up the sky, a beacon in the darkness. "Bear up, darling. We're almost there," Sinclair whispered in her ear.

Footsteps could be heard coming toward them. Gabriel motioned with his head to a stand of trees on their left and they hurried into them, out of view. A man ran past, followed by three other men. Charlie gasped, and Sinclair covered her mouth but not before the name slipped out. "Michael."
