“I thought you might be doing it just to be facetious.”

I bark out a laugh. “That’s not what this is, but I will give you a pass. That’stotallysomething I would do to be a pain in the ass.”

His eyebrows wing up in surprise.

“What?”

“People aren’t usually that honest, especially about themselves.”

“I’m always honest about myself. Well, no. I’m honest about myself most of the time, but I fib sometimes. I know I’m a lot to take.”

Again, his gaze dips to my mouth, lingers, then slides back up. “I can see that.”

All of a sudden, the living room is hot. Like boiling hot, but it has nothing to do with the AC and everything to do with the man sharing the couch with me. Even as I feel hot, my nipples harden against my shirt. This is so not good. Not good at all.

“You know you don’t have to babysit me.”

He studies me for a long time, and I get the sense he’s weighing everything and how to respond.

“No, I want to see what happens to these guys.”

“You’ve never seen this movie?”

He shakes his head.

I pause the movie, then pop up from the couch.

“Where are you going?”

“We need popcorn if we’re going to watch this the right way.”

And if he’s going to stay up with me, I might just keep from embarrassing myself if I’m shoving popcorn in my mouth.

It only takes me a few minutes to make the popcorn in the microwave, then hurry back to the couch. Meredith is practically lying on Jon by the time I get back. I settle down and start the movie again.

“Here,” I say, holding the bowl out to Jon.

He glances down at it, then back up to me.

“It’s not poisoned.”

Another eye roll. “I just don’t normally eat in the middle of the night.”

I shake the bowl. “Come on, be bad for once in your life, Jon.”

He glances up at me with an unreadable expression before he takes a handful of popcorn. Then we both settle back to watch the movie. All the while, I keep reminding myself that this man is trying to get me kicked out of the house.

But in less than twenty-four hours since he moved in, I’m starting to realize that I might have a real fight.

ChapterFifteen

Jon

Ihead out early the following day after my grandmother summons me. Usually, I would ignore her because I have work to do, but I needed out of the house.

Last night had been full of Avery, seeing her with her family, then spending the night watching that stupid movie. And no, I’m not smiling now thinking about her grandmother naming her cat McLovin.

I learned two things last night. One, Avery likes looking at my chest. Thinking about how her gaze roamed over it last night has my cock thickening.
