Andrew nodded slowly and then turned to face her. “All right,” he said decidedly. “If you think it’s the right move, I trust you. I really would appreciate the help.”

She grinned. “It’s like you said; we used to make a pretty good team.”

Andrew laughed and moved to lean on his elbow, which seemed to close the distance between them by a few inches. When his arm brushed against hers, she made no effort to move it.

“It’s true, and we didn’t even like each other back then.”

Sadie chuckled at that. “My, how things have changed.”

“Yeah.” Andrew's voice was quiet. His gaze slid down to her lips. She wasn’t sure if it was real or just her imagination, but he seemed closer than he had been a moment before. The eager flutters in her stomach mixed with disbelief. Andrew Price was going to kiss her. She wanted him to kiss her. Her breath froze in her chest as she waited.

And waited.

“Hey, Price! Are you in here?”

Sadie’s eyes flashed wide. “Tyson,” she hissed.

She tried to roll away from Andrew onto her back so she could sit up, but the beanbag gave out beneath her and she rolled too far. Her hip crashed to the ground and she winced. When she opened her eyes, Tyson stood above her in his uniform, grinning from ear to ear.

“Hey, kids, I’m pretty sure the library’s closed.”

“The library closes when I say it does,” Andrew replied, chuckling.

Sadie eyed him from her place on the floor. Why hadn’t he kissed her? Had she imagined what just happened between them? He was sitting up, one leg crossed over the other, with an arm slung over his knee. Her heart was beating out of her chest, but he seemed completely at ease.

“Need a hand there, Sadie?” Tyson asked.

She shook her head and pushed herself up to a sitting position, crossing her legs on the rug. What was he going to tell Julie?

“Having a slow night?” Andrew asked. “Figured you would come check out a book to keep you company?”

“It's always a slow night.” Tyson shrugged. “I saw the light on, thought I would check on you. You shouldn’t leave the door unlocked when you stay late.”

“But then I wouldn’t get any unexpected company.”

“Oh, speaking of company, are you two coming to the barbecue this weekend?” Tyson asked.

“Yeah, I’ll be there.” Andrew glanced at Sadie and then looked away.

“Sadie?”

She shook her head. “No, sorry. I’m heading back to Seattle for a few days, and I want to get on the road early tomorrow.”

“What? It’s the weekend!” Tyson protested.

“I know, but I’ve got my big presentation on Tuesday, and I want to get settled a bit beforehand. Every now and then I like to make sure my apartment hasn’t burned down, you know?”

“Well, that’s a shame,” Tyson told her. “There’s going to be a few single cops there, Julie was hoping to set you up with someone.”

Sadie’s eyes darted to Andrew but he wasn’t looking at her. A loose string in the beanbag seemed to have caught his full attention.

“She told me she was done with that.” She stood, irritation suddenly making her restless. “I’d better get going. Like I said, I’ve got a long drive in the morning.”

Tyson moved to follow her. “I’ll walk you out. It’ll make me feel like I had a productive night. Are you heading home, too, Price?“

“No, I’ve got a few things to do before I leave. Thanks for checking in on me though.”

No one said a word as Andrew walked them to the door.
