“I don’t see that being a problem. Mr. Gregson seems incredibly eager to sell. Since he lives out of state, he would probably appreciate the uncomplicated nature of selling to a company like ours. If we promise to do the heavy lifting, we can get the property for a song,” Sadie promised.

Genevieve whispered something to the man next to her. He looked at Sadie and asked, “Can you get us electronic copies of all of your projections? We’d like to go over the numbers ourselves.”

“Yes, I can get those to you this afternoon. Are there any other questions?” she asked, looking around the room. Most of the faces were hard to read, but she was pretty sure Genevieve at least looked pleased. Archer, too, offered her an encouraging smile.

When no one spoke, Genevieve picked up the papers in front of her and cleared her throat. “Well, Ms. Connor, you’ve given us a lot to think about. Thank you for putting all of this together.” She stood and everyone else followed.

“If you need any other information . . .” Sadie began.

“We’ll be in touch,” Genevieve assured her.

She and her entourage left the conference room in a huddle. Sadie watched them go, wringing her hands. If that didn’t push her toward a promotion, she wasn’t sure what would.

“Great job, Sadie,” Archer said, patting her shoulder. “Once you get this cleaned up, could you come by my office? I’m having trouble with another spreadsheet. I was hoping you could walk me through it again.”

“Of course.”

It turned out to be a simple formula error, one she’d helped him with several times before. She spent a few minutes getting it sorted out and then went back to her office. She’d left her phone on her desk and she wanted to text Julie to tell her how the presentation had gone. When she picked it up, though, there was a new message from an unknown number.

Unknown: Hey, it’s Andrew. Tyson gave me you’re number, hope you don’t mind.

Sadie chewed on her lip as she read the text over. Up to that point her interactions with Andrew had all been in person and mostly kept to the library. Now that he had her number, and she had his, they could communicate whenever they wanted. It was a development she wasn’t sure she was ready for.

Ready or not, the damage was done. She thought for a moment and then responded with a single word.

Sadie: Your

His response was almost instant.

Andrew: Autocorrect. You can’t hold that against me.

Sadie: Sure it was.

He sent back an eye roll emoji and she grinned.

Andrew: I was wondering when YOU’RE planning to head back this way.

Sadie: Missing me already?

She regretted it as soon as she hit send. Was that too much? It sounded more flirtatious than she’d intended. She wasn’t even sure if she wanted to sound flirtatious at all. As the seconds ticked by without a response, her thumb tapped faster and faster against the desk. Finally she typed:

Andrew: A bit.

She didn’t know if she was more relieved or surprised by the response, but another message followed immediately after.

Andrew: No one has pestered me in days. I’m not really sure what to do with myself.

She smiled nervously. This was definitely beginning to feel like flirting.

Sadie: You poor thing. I should have asked Julie to cover for me while I’m gone. Don’t worry though. I’ll be back tomorrow night.

Andrew: Good, because I was hoping we could have dinner together.

Dinner.

Together.

He’d invited her to have dinner with him on Friday night but she hadn’t thought much of it at the time. It seemed like the most convenient thing to do while they were busy working. Had he meant it to be a date, then? She saw an empty text bubble appear beside his name, then it disappeared. She should probably answer him. Her phone buzzed again.
