“Dad is an administrator, and you know it.”

“Whatever.”

“Listen, I’m going to head back to the hospital.”

She looked at her watch. “Won’t they question why you’re returning?”

He shook his head. “I’ll say I healed quickly.” Then he grinned.

“Don’t tell anyone why that’s true.”

David grinned. “Not to worry. I’ve kept the secret for thirty-six years. I’m not going to blab now.” He then left.

Curious how the men were doing, Malia stepped into the room. Like David had mentioned, both were still in their wolf form. Some of their wounds looked a little raw, but she bet by the time they woke, she wouldn’t be able to tell they’d even been in a fight.

Not wanting to disturb them further, she returned to the living room to wait.

Luke shifted back into his human form, sat up on the bed, and looked around. Where was he? He remembered being told to shift, and for some reason, it was as if he was ten-years old again and his dad was demanding he do it.

Luke shook his head to make some sense of it all. The last thing he remembered was having the crap beaten out of him by those cattle rustlers. When he spotted his brother, relief washed through him. “Ryan, wake up.”

“You’re awake?”Ryan telepathed, remaining in his wolf form.

“How else could I talk to you?”

Ryan opened his eyes. A second later, he shifted into his human form too. “How are you feeling?”

Luke looked down at his leg. There was a red mark where he’d been shot. He then touched his arm, but there was little pain. “Good. You?”

“Good.”

“Where the hell are we?” Luke asked.

Ryan explained how the sheriff had spotted their horses and then found them in field. “He called an ambulance. We ended up in Midvale Hospital.”

“Oh, shit. Why was I told to shift then? That could be bad.”

His brother held up a hand. “Don’t worry. This nurse, Malia, took us to her uncle’s place. This is it. He treats werewolves here.”

All of this was almost too much to comprehend. He studied the room. While he’d never actually been in a hospital room, this didn’t look exactly like what he’d seen on television. “We can’t afford this, and it’s not like we have insurance.”

“I have the sense these people did this out of the kindness of their hearts.”

Luke huffed out a laugh. “No one does that these days.”

Ryan placed his feet on the floor, stood, and stretched. “Good to go. Ready? Malia said she’d drive us home.”

Luke stood too and was pleased that he felt quite normal. He looked for a mirror to see if his face was as messed up as he thought it might be, but he didn’t see one. When he dragged his palms down his cheeks, it felt good. Ryan also appeared to be back to normal.

Their clothes had been neatly folded on a table. Once they dressed, they headed out.

CHAPTERTHREE

When the door to the back room opened, Malia jerked awake. She must have fallen asleep on the sofa.

Ryan and Luke came out, looking good. Hell, who was she kidding? They looked amazingly hot. Even though they were fraternal twins, the men had the same nose and same full lips. One obvious difference was that Ryan’s hair was blond whereas Luke’s was brown. A second, less noticeable difference, was that Luke was an inch or two taller.
