“How do you know that John is still holding a grudge against you?" Zane asked. “He has to know he was the one who messed up.”
“He told me he was angry with me. You see, a few months ago, he asked if I’d consider returning to his firm. He said he’d even make me a partner. Needless to say, I told him no. I’d just secured this job with Drew.” She swept her hand around. “This is my dream job.”
The pieces fell into place. “What better way to harm you than staging a robbery at the Woodland Estates? He might be attempting to damage your business opportunities."
Blair lifted her uninjured hand, ran her fingers through her hair, and sighed. That one sensual move made his cock harden. Not good. He didn’t mind if Blair thought he was interested in her, but he wanted to establish a relationship first. And if Jeff was also her mate, they’d have to take things slow.
“It’s possible.”
“The sheriff’s son, Mason, is a private investigator. Let me see what he can dig up on John.”
“Can you keep my name out of it? It took a while for him to get the hint that I wasn’t interested in him anymore. And if John is trying to get back at me, I don’t need to add any more fuel to the fire.”
“I get it. John isn’t the violent type, is he?” Zane asked.
She glanced off to the side. “No.”
“What was that look for?”
Blair stared at him for a moment. “My dad used to abuse my mom so I know the signs. I stay away from those kinds of men.”
“Good to know.” Zane pushed back his chair. “How’s the wrist and the head? Sorry, I should have asked before.” But he had been so taken by seeing her that he forgot.
She wiggled her fingers. “Better today. I had a headache last night, but it’s mostly gone now. Thanks for asking.”
“Yeah. I’ll let you know if I learn anything about John Gaines.”
“Just so you know, he’s not the type to do the dirty work himself—assuming he did orchestrate things.”
That would complicate matters. “I’ll keep that in mind.”
Blair sat up straighter. “Oh, before you go, I need to mention that Avery is checking on a lead.”
“She’s not going into the woods is she?”
Blair smiled. “No. She thinks that Mrs. Hensley might have spoken with Renata Blue Sky about an aura cleansing to make sure her dead sister doesn’t visit her.”
“Does Avery suspect Renata of being the thief?”
“No, but Renata might have mentioned that Mrs. Hensley was going out of town. For all we know, Mrs. Hensley hired Renata to do a ghost exorcism when she and Mr. Hensley returned.”
That was logical. “Keep me updated on her findings.”
“Will do.”
Before he said or did anything he’d regret, Zane left. His first stop needed to be Mason Granger’s office in town.
CHAPTEREIGHT
As luck would have it,Mason was in his office. Zane entered the main office area and then knocked on Jeff’s cousin’s inner door.
Mason looked up. “Well, well. I was wondering when someone from Woodland Estates would show up. I take it this visit has to do with the robbery?”
“It does.” Mason’s dad was the sheriff and often requested research help from his son.
“Have a seat, and tell me how I can help.”
Since Mason was familiar with the theft case, Zane listed a few suspects, starting with Phil DePaul. “He’s a werewolf so he could be guilty.”
