“And if we bring too many, they’ll know we’re coming.”
“So who then? The two of us, Laura, and your brothers?” he asked.
“Yes. Now. We can’t give them any time to figure out that we know.”
“Let’s go.”
FORTY-ONE
DOMINIC
“Ready?” Vin asked after we’d alerted my brothers and Laura about what we’d found and gave them a location to meet us. He checked a gun he’d taken out of a hidden safe before putting it in his belt, and then he added stakes to it as well.
“Do either of those work against witches?” I didn’t take the gun he offered. If I found my brother, I’d rip his throat out with my teeth.
“I don’t know, but I’d rather be prepared for some of our enemies than none.”
“You know silver doesn’t really do anything to wolves.”
Vin lifted his brows. “What?”
“I think that rumor came about because a silver bullet to the heart would kill anyone. Maybe not a vampire, but any mortal creature.”
He laughed but seemed to see merit in the assessment. “Fair enough.”
I paused and stared at him, a little too hard, for a little too long.
“What?” he asked when I didn’t look away.
“I feel like I should say something in case—” I cut myself off, not wanting to will my thoughts into existence.
“Just in case one of us—”
I nodded, suddenly feeling too heavy to have this conversation.
He collected me in his arms, and I didn’t resist like I normally would have. I leaned into the embrace. “Does it feel like this is it?”
“I don’t know. I don’t want it to, but then I think back to the prophecy, and I can’t help but think it has to be. I’m almost thirty, and this feels like a trap.”
“Should we not go? Do more research?” he asked, and I loved how thoughtful he was.
“No, last time I avoided my fate, I pushed myself closer to it. I don’t want to avoid it and cause it to happen faster or cause more deaths in the pack. We have to face it.” But I was mad at the universe. Mad at all the days I’d miss with Vin. Mad we never got easy. I held in my anger, not wanting to wreck what were possibly my last hours with Vin.
He brushed his lips over my temple. “I’m not letting you go. The universe can try to rip you from my hands, but they will have to kill me first.” He believed his words. Like he could somehow prevent me from passing through the veil.
I loved him more for it. “I love you.”
He pressed his eyes closed, fighting emotion, but I felt it in the bond. “I love you, you bastard.”
I cupped his face, bringing his lips to mine. “I’m sorry.”
“Don’t you fucking start.” His voice was strained with emotion.
“Let me finish.”
He pressed his face into my cheek. “Fine.”
“I’m sorry I resisted this for so long. I’m sorry I put you through what I did. I’m sorry we don’t have enough time, but I’ll come back for you. One life wasn’t enough.”
