That way they wouldn't have to continue to entering and housekeeping while they were trying to enjoy their trip.

The only reason Millie could have been in that room was to take Mrs. Millers' earrings. The jewelry box that sat on the dresser was just another casualty, something else she took for herself.

But she couldn't let the couple know what had happened. Not until she knew that Millie had the pearl earrings.

And it would look incredibly unprofessional if it became known that she hired someone who stole from people. Her credibility would go down the drain.

"I'll try talking to her. In the meantime, I'll keep an eye out for them and call you if we find anything," April said, reassuring her.

"Thank you so much, April. We really appreciate it," Mrs. Miller replied before hanging up.

April put her head into her hands. What else could possibly go wrong?

CHAPTER TWENTY TWO

April sat on the floor in the lobby of her bed and breakfast, feeling defeated. She thought about how not much else could go wrong at this point. It felt like a never-ending cycle of bad luck.

She was so exhausted that all she wanted to do was curl up into a ball and sleep until it all went away.

Her mind wandered to the past few days and all of the events that had taken place. It felt like her world had been turned upside down.

April thought back to all the other guests who had stayed at her bed and breakfast over the past few days. What else had occurred that hadn't been reported yet?

Did her father start arguments with any of them? Had Millie stolen from anyone else?

What she saw was only the surface. Just like with Isaac. Who knew what else he had planned for her?

After taking a moment to herself to reflect, she got up and went to the kitchen to make herself a cup of coffee. As she opened the cupboard, she noticed that the jar of coffee beans was almost empty. Great, just another thing to add to the list of things she needed to take care of.

She grabbed her phone and opened up the notes app. She added "buy coffee beans" to the list of things she needed to do.

As she stared at the phone in her hand, a call flashed across the screen. It was an unknown number, which made her nervous. She bit her bottom lip as she answered.

"Hello?"

An unwelcome familiar voice came through the line, "Hey, April."

It was Maxwell, her boss from the law firm. After finding her at the house months ago, he decided to hit on her and then beg her to come back to the office. There was nothing more he could say.

"What do you want?" she replied angrily. April knew she should have just hung up, but she couldn't help being curious in what he had to say for himself.

"The firm has been struggling," he said through gritted teeth. She could tell that this was the last thing he wanted to do. It was clearly his last resort. "We would like to offer you a position back on the team."

April rolled her eyes and leaned against her counter. "You already did that. I turned you down, or do you not remember?"

She hoped the words hit him, and he thought about what he did to her. If he was a good boss, he wouldn't hit on his employees. He was a jerk. And she would never forget that.

"We have a different offer to send you. I wanted to let you know before it came up in your inbox so you know it's real. April, it's a fifty percent increase."

April was taken aback. She hadn't expected this. She knew she could use the extra money to help take care of the bed and breakfast. And it was a lot of money.

She thought that she was done with her career in the legal field. Why were they offering her such a good deal? "What's in it for you?" she asked, knowing that deals like this never came without strings.

"We get you back," he replied quietly.

It was blatantly obvious that Maxwell wasn't the one who wanted her back. It was the board and senior members who forced him to talk to her.

Usually, she wouldn't even consider it. But with everything going on, she didn't want to turn it down right away. April suspected she would say no, but there was too much to think about to make a decision right away.
