“Miti, I’m fine!” Bruno said, but he took the bottle and chugged the contents down. “I need to go see—” The bed shook as Bruno slammed back onto his pillow. With his lids closed, he was snoring in an instant.
“That was a strong one, Miti,” I said.
“Only because I know how stubborn you boys are. I had to knock out his wolf too. Wouldn’t do for either of them to be awake right now. They both need their rest.” She turned to look at me, and I saw determination shining in her eyes. “You are to stay here with Bruno.”
“I need to—”
“No. I heard the conversation you and Bruno just had.” She shook her head. “To think your mate would play the two of you. I would think she is the one who should be upset that the two of you have been playing her! And that you shifted in the worst possible way in front of her. The girl will be scarred for life.”
I groaned and hung my head. What a mess.
Miti led me to my bed on the other side of the room and gave me a cup of hot tea to drink. “I’ll have Jill and Becca pay Millie a visit. You just relax.” She gave me a slight push, and I sank backward onto the bed, my wolf crying with me.
Millie
My phone rang, waking me up, and I picked up on instinct. “Hello,” I croaked.
“Millie, it’s Becca.”
I went to press the ‘end call’ button, but in my fuzzy state, I couldn’t find the button fast enough.
“Please don’t hang up! It’s just me and Jill,” Becca called down the line.
“Hi, Millie,” Jill cried, sounding way too perky for this early in the morning.
“What do you two want?” I tried burying back under the covers, hoping they’d quickly say what they wanted to say so I could go back to sleep.
“We’ll be at your place in an hour. We just wanted to give you a heads-up,” Becca said.
I flung the covers away. “What? Why?”
“We want to see you. It’s been a while,” Becca said.
I could hear the high-pitched tone to her words and realized she must know what I had seen. Panic flared. “I don’t want you to come. I’m fine. Lira is here with me and—”
“We’re already on our way. We just wanted to give you a heads-up so we didn’t surprise you,” Becca repeated quickly. “And Millie?”
“Yeah?”
“Please; we’re still your friends. We’re still us. Nothing’s changed. We’ll see you soon, okay?”
I sighed. They were my friends, and I did miss them. I told myself I’d see them one more time before I did what Lira had suggested last night. We’d both decided to move back to San Francisco for a little while. It would give us a chance to recover and reset. Lira said there was bound to be someone for me out there. Jacob wasn’t for me. Though my heart squeezed at the thought of never seeing him again.
Sighing, I said softly, “Okay. I’ll be here.”
“Great!” Becca cried. “Sorry, that was too loud. But we’ll see you soon.” Becca hung up, and I stared at my phone a bit before turning over to shake Lira awake.
“Wake up, sleepyhead,” I whispered into her ear. For some reason, talking quietly woke her up faster than being loud.
She groaned and rolled over, slapping me in the face with her outstretched arm.
“Good morning to you too,” I said, giving her a shove.
“Why are you waking me up so early?”
“It’s already noon. I’m going to go make lunch.”
“You going to tell me what happened last night first?”
