A shift in the magic around us cut off his words.

The hairs on the back of my neck stood on end anew.

All of us turned wide eyes toward the same area of raging snow just as a figure materialized out of thin air.

A figure with a face hidden by a hood.

Hands covered in gray skin with mottled red veins shifted the robe back.

A snarl tore from the Fire Wolf’s mouth just as the warlock revealed his face.

Fear pounded through me when the same warlock that had tried to murder Daiseeum stood before us.

“It’s him!” I immediately called forth my affinities to create a protective dome around all of us, but my air affinity didn’t respond.

I was entirely tapped out.

My magic wasgone.

The warlock’s thin lip curled as his black eyes assessed us. “Which one of you destroyed my veil?”

CHAPTER 30 - NORIVUN

Ispun away from the warlock just as he released a curse. It shot through the air, heading right for the Fire Wolf.

The hunter jumped to the side at the last second, swearing under his breath, as he ducked and rolled.

All of my guards fanned out, swords in hand as they tried to surround the warlock, but with our magic depleted, we all moved so damned slowly.

Cold winter wind whipped around us, snow everywhere, since Ilara’s air Shield had disappeared when the spell had run us dry.

Snarling with fury, I called upon my magic, my affinities, something, anything, but the spell had drained me completely. I was entirely without magic.

Fuck!

My limbs moved as though I was weighted down. My arms felt as if they’d been tied to stone bricks.

Fear stole through me when the warlock moved like the wind. Despite vastly outnumbering him, we were no stronger than magicless children, and the warlock was pure power.

In a blink, he was behind Ilara, and he pulled a wicked-looking blade from within his cloak.

My heart felt as if it’d stopped.

I ran.

Bellowed.

Roared with fury.

But I was too slow.

Ilara spun to face the warlock just as he sliced the blade through the air.

Helplessness consumed me when my legs didn’t move faster. It was the same as when I’d been a child, and my father had raised his hand to my mother. I hadn’t been able to stop him either.

The warlock slashed right at my mate.

I roared again, but his attack didn’t slow.
