“Morning, Doll,” a quiet yet raspy voice says beside me.

I groan again and force my eyes to open.

I have every intention of looking over at Mav, but the second my vision clears and the view before me emerges, everything flies out the window.

“Where are we?” I ask on a gasp.

“Heaven?” Mav suggests lightly before the car falls silent.

I stare ahead, my gaze glued to the beautiful yellow and orange sunrise. The colors are reflected in the still ocean before it turns a stunning, welcoming blue.

“Yeah,” I whisper, unable to speak any louder in case it ruins it.

It’s not until the heat of Mav’s fingers warms my ear as he tucks a stray lock of my hair behind it that I remember everything.

“Where are we?” I ask again, finally ripping my eyes from the sunrise and focusing on my husband.

He looks exhausted. His eyes are bloodshot and ringed with dark circles.

“It doesn’t matter. All you need to know is that we’re safe,” he assures me, reaching out his other hand and cupping my jaw.

My heart swells as I stare into his dark eyes.

Instantly, I believe him.

I know that no matter what, he’ll protect me.

Things might be weird between us, but when I’m with him, I know I’m safe. I’m home.

“Have you driven all night?” I ask. Stupid question really, but it spills from my lips regardless.

“Yeah, and thankfully you fell asleep so you couldn’t tell me off for speeding to get here so that you could see this.”

“You’re too good to me,” I confess.

A humorless laugh bubbles from his lips, as his eyes drop to mine for a moment.

“I think we both know that’s not true.”

He leans forward, making his intentions well known. But just before our lips touch, he pauses. Everything that used to hold him back floods his eyes and he starts second-guessing himself.

“Is my breath that bad?” I joke, trying to make light of the situation.

“Doll.” He sighs, his minty breath rushing over my face.

The scent makes me cringe because I know for a fact that mine is nowhere near as fresh.

“Nothing has changed, Mav. I still want you. Just because we’ve left them behind it doesn’t mean—”

His lips collide with mine a beat before his tongue pushes inside in search of mine.

A moan rips up my throat as his fingers slide into my hair, allowing him to angle me exactly as he wants me.

Heat floods through my body, ensuring every inch of me is fully awake.

Reaching out, I wrap one hand around the back of his neck, anchoring myself to him as the other slides up his denim-covered thigh.

His muscles bunch as I get higher. I expect him to stop me. Hell knows he has every other time we’ve gotten this far.
