Page 83 of Enchanted Queen

I closed my eyes and thought of Esta. How wronged she’d been by all of this and how undeserving of it she was. She didn’t deserve her crown ripped from her. She deserved to rule in her own way, watching out and protecting her people.

I sent my magic out and thought of how much I wanted her to be able to shift. To be free of the prison of only one form.

I opened my eyes to see that nothing had happened. Esta was slowly being wrapped around with my magic, but she was still obviously a dragon.

“More,” Emric called from the shore.

“Thank you,” I offered sarcastically.

I sent more, again truly focusing on healing thoughts. I wanted Esta to be healthy. And in order for the Dra Skor Enchanted to truly be healthy, they needed to be able to switch forms. Both forms.

“Talk to me, please?” I asked her.

What would you like for me to say?

My magic seemed to draw tighter around her when she spoke to me telepathically, as if sensing something. I sent my magic after it in droves, focusing on whatever it was.

Once she was fully glowing, it was then that her hand changed.

Not refusing to let my magic fall, I sent even more.

I got her hand to show up to her wrist. It was a bizarre thing to see a dragon with one human hand fading into scales, but also was the best thing I had seen all day and that was saying something.

The queen’s hand was there for ten seconds or more this time, and then her talons snapped back.

I let my magic fall only to give her a break. “One more time?”

No. Not tonight.

“You are needed back at the castle, I know that. I just think I’m finally focusing on what I need to be now,” I explained.

No,Esta said more firmly as she swung her body around and headed out of the lake.

“Your Highness?” I asked. Something was wrong. I just didn’t know what.

She didn’t answer.

“Esta.”

She turned her head so I could see her profile, and I could see her torment clearly in her green eye.It is painful.

My breath immediately left my body. Had I hurt her? Had she been silently suffering while I wrapped her in my magic? My voice was calm and quiet as I asked, “Did I hurt you?”

No. Not physically. But it is painful to remember what I was.

“What youare,” I corrected.

I was not scared that I wouldn’t see my hand again, I was scared that I would. She paused and looked up at the stars.I do not know if you will be able to unlock our Enchantment. I want to believe that you can. But if you cannot, I think it might have been better to have never seen my hand again.

“I can experiment on Whit, or Malachi once The Aaruk lake is fixed,” I offered.

She shook her head. The Drak is safest for this. It has to be me.

She had a point. The Drak did have fewer interruptions, also fewer eyes. “I can try it on Serkan.”

It has to be me. I will get used to it.

“Danger unto death,” Amory muttered, and I wondered how much of our conversation the rest of them heard.
