“It was a corporation.”

Makes sense.

The spinning of the world seems to accelerate as other thoughts intrude. “Can I borrow your computer?”

“Yeah.” After plonking her mug onto a coaster, Amelia hurries to her office to grab her laptop, and we both drop down next to each other on the couch.

“May I?”

With a shrug, she turns the device in my direction.

Because of my work for Celeste, I know multiple ways to access information other than through a regular search engine.

“Wow. Fancy.”

Unfortunately, within minutes, I discover more than I ever wanted to know.

Though nothing has ever been proven, there are rumors that my former fiancé belongs to a secret society known as the Zetas. Members are called Titans, and the organization is supposedly comprised of the world’s most powerful people. Politicians, world leaders, Hollywood stars, billionaires, tech darlings, even writers and directors. Their symbol is reported to be an owl. With two emeralds as eyes. An artist’s rendition looks remarkably similar to the rings Nico and Lorenzo wear.

Since I was hired at Fallon and Associates, I’ve learned a lot about the world’s power structure, but I really didn’t believe secret societies still existed. Sure, some at the top-tier universities, but in the real world?

Amelia exhales and studies me carefully. “Are you sure you want to know more?”

Now that I’m no longer blinded by the illusion of love, I press my lips together. “Yes.”

With determination, I resume my search…only to learn that he is reportedly a mobster.

I go numb from the inside out.

His uncle—the one we were supposed to join for dinner this weekend—is supposedly Raffaele Moretti.DonRaffaele Moretti.

“You…” Amelia blinks, seemingly speechless as she looks at me.

“Yeah.” I can barely breathe as I bury my fingernails into my palms. “I almost married into the mob.” And I’d have done so blindly and happily.

Nico Moretti is not the man I thought he was. He’s much, much worse.

And deep down, I’m afraid he will follow through on his threat to never let me go.

The next morning, I shockingly discover how right my intuition was.

CHAPTERFOURTEEN

Bella

The next morning,I realize I’m living a full-on nightmare.

I’ve barely slept, and my fitful rest has been disturbed by memories of the man who has me trapped.

“Are you sure you want to leave?” Amelia asks as I sling my purse over my shoulder.

“Reality won’t become any easier by refusing to confront it.”

“But it can wait a little longer.”

It’s barely six a.m., but I’m dressed in a skirt and blouse that Amelia has loaned me. My borrowed shoes are a little too small, and so are the clothes, but as the saying goes, beggars can’t be choosers. “I’m meeting Alessandro in half an hour.”

Before going to bed last night, I finally checked my phone to discover several missed calls and text messages from my brother, each more frantic than the last. There are things I need to know, he insists, before I make any rash decisions.
